"God Moments" in Your Life

By Sister Mary Core, OSB

God moments happen all the time ... and sometimes in the unlikeliest of places. Often, in fact, we don't recognize them. We're put in mind of this during the Easter season because of the unrecognized appearances of Jesus following the resurrection.

No matter how much his followers loved him, they didn't always recognize him.

That's something we can all relate to.

I recognized a wonderful God moment recently. I was having coffee with a friend when the most delightful little child skipped into the caf with his dad. We made eye contact and I was absolutely lifted by the joy he was exuding.

Definitely a God moment.

Isn't the Easter experience about this? About focusing on - and recognizing - Jesus in one another?

The Easter season reminds us, scripturally, of the repeated appearances of Jesus. Do we recognize him in the beautiful sunrise? Probably. Do we recognize him in the disheveled homeless man shuffling along the street downtown? Maybe not.

Who is the Messiah we are looking for? Do we look for him in a place of power and prestige? We'll never find him there.

Do we look for him as we serve others? That's where he lives. We have only to pay attention to see.

If we're willing to take up the cross and follow him - and the cross is our service to others ... the ultimate gift of love and life - we will find him.
