Last month, we began our exploration of the Benedictine Monastic Promises with an overview and a discussion of Stability. This month, we will explore Obedience and Fidelity to the Monastic Way of Life.
These promises are different from the vows taken by apostolic communities such as the Franciscans and Dominicans. They are definitely more than a word difference!
Our promises underscore our commitment to each other, as Sisters of St. Benedict. They underscore our commitment to seeking God together. They underscore our commitment to be faithful for life.
We wait at least 3 years before making these promises. During that time, we live and work and learn in community as postulants and novices, continuing our discernment. We want to be sure the community is right for us ... and that we are right for the community!
At the end of our 2nd Novice year, we make our First Monastic Profession, which is where the promises come in.
We asked Sister Mary Core - who has served both as Formation Director and Vocation Director for our community - to talk about the promises. Last month she shared an overview and her thoughts about Stability. In the the first video here, she reflects on Obedience. In the 2nd video, she explores Fidelity to the Monastic Way of Life.
As always, please reply to this email with any questions or thoughts you have. We are eager to connect with you on your vocation journey, whether to answer a single question or to explore monastic life. Blessings!
