Welcome to a bright and shiny New Year!
January 2015

Slainte  !

How are you doing so far in this shiny New Year? It's a quiet time in the herbatorium, but busy planning and imagining and paperworking (that part is ick). We are investigating a few new items and lines. For example, would you be interested in aromatherapy items for memory, relaxation, sinus or cold care, or travel? What about Mela Tae's for baths (bath teas)? Maybe there are different scents you're looking for in lotion bars or linen sprays? Now's the time to let us know so we can have time to play before the season of fairs, festivals, and merriment set upon us! You can email us at celticchairde@optonline.net with your ideas. We're always here to be inspired by you!

We're Not Horsing Around for
 Rivers Edge Horse Rescue

There's a little farm tucked up in the hills of Newton. There you'll see horses playing in lovely paddocks not far from their nice warm barn. A kind lady and some of valiant volunteers smile, feed, pet, hug, and tend to these beautiful animals. The thing is, without the good heart of Dianne, these wonderful horses would likely have been killed or died from neglect. She rescued them and has given them a wonderful life at Rivers Edge Horse Rescue & Sanctuary.

But tending to horses can be costly, and sometimes they need help. We like to do our part, so for every order, Facebook like, Twitter Retweet or favorite, and email forward or sign up, blog share or comment, basically any interaction -  we'll make a donation to this wonderful horsey happy place. Help us make this a happy, full bellied, warm and toasty January for the horses of Rivers Edge.

For the Love of Tea

January, one of the colder months of the year. Filled with frosty days, and icy nights, it's the perfect time to cuddle up and celebrate Hot Tea Month.

Growing up I remember only having a few options for tea choices. When I was feeling sick, a nice cup of Orange Pekoe with lemon and honey was the go to beverage. But time has passed and there are innumerable combinations and blends of herbs, fruits, and teas of green, black, red, and white. Something for everyone's tastes and needs.

Where ever we travel, I always look for new and interesting teas to try. I do have a few favorite companies though. Teavana (even though it's now owned by Starbucks) has some terrific blends. The Chai's are my favorites, especially Maharaja Chai Oolong Tea. Throw in some cream, chai spiced infused honey, and just a dash of chocolate and it's heaven. Oh so warming and rich.

Another favorite is a small company, Ducky Life Tea. Their Julia's Ginger Matte is divine! It's a lovely digestive for after a big meal or if you're feeling coldy.

Tea is also very good for you. Different teas have different constituents and benefits, but they all provide something to help your health.

It's the perfect month to be brave and try some new teas. Cozy up on the couch with a nice hot cuppa and celebrate.

I'M SO DRY!

It's freezing outside, so you turn up the heat in the car and your house and (after some disputes probably) at the office. It doesn't matter what kind of heat you have, it will create a dryness in the air that will also effect your skin. It also tends to be drier outside when it's cold, even though there may be snow and ice. That will also sap some of your skins moisture. The result - dry, itchy and cracked.

Now is the time to moisturize more. Even with oily skin types, you have to provide some moisture and protection to protect your skin from evaporation.  This is particularly important for your hands. They may be tough, but they'll crack and hurt. Airmid's Salve for Gardeners and our wonderful lotion bars are perfect protection and moisturizing for your hands.

Make sure to moisturize your face as well. Our Revive & Refresh is nice, but I'd actually recommend our Jazzy Lavender  or something else that's a little heavier. Especially if you're going to be spending some time out in the elements.

Other tips to to keep your dry ick factor down:

  • Use a humidifier to provide some moisture in the air.
  • Exfoliate - but gently. As good as the scrubbing may feel on itchy skin, you don't want to damage it further.
  • Wet may seem like the answer - but not if your gloves or socks or clothes are wet in the cold air.
  • As tempting as a hot bath or shower might be... don't go for the hottest temperatures. Keep it more moderate for the barrier of your skin doesn't break from the extreme change in temperature.

You can survive the winter cold with a little common sense - and a whole lot of smoothing, soothing moisturizer.
