Winter Scene
Cuddled Up & Keeping Warm
February 2014

Slainte  !

As winter continues to plow along, we bundle up closer together and snuggle into our homes. Admittedly, this year, we may be feeling an extra longing for spring. But it's good to enjoy the season and the togetherness it may bring. It's the perfect time for family games, projects, clean ups, and reconnecting.

What the Heck is

Faoiseamh Poit?

Faoiseamh (fwee-sha) Poit (poache) is Irish for hangover relief. Simple as that. Well, that's what the name means, anyway. What it is is an aromatic burst of relief when you've had one or more too many.

The very best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink alcohol at all. However, that isn't what usually happens. A gathering of friends or family with good conversation and fun often incurs some - or lots - of overindulgence. And you'll have to pay the next day. We've taken some wonderful essential oils and blended them together to help bring some relief to the headache, nausea, and overall horribliness that is a hangover.

Orange oil helps with the nausea, peppermint opens the sinuses and helps with breathing, grapefruit aids in lightening your spirit, and all of them work together to, well, help you not want to curl up and die.

Be prepared the next time your planning to party. Get some Faoiseamh Poit .

Colds and Flu and Winter Blues -
Try a Little Fire

Winter keeps rolling through, and with it comes flu's, colds, and a general feeling of ennui. There's an age old remedy you may have heard about. It uses the many healthful benefits of apple cider vinegar, onions, garlic, ginger, horseradish and honey to kick start your immune system. An easy remedy to make at home, useful for your health and for cooking!

At our Celtic Chairde Comhr (our blog), you can find the recipe for fire cider as well as a great video from Rosemary Gladstar, the first herbalist to public share this information.

Once you make your fiery cider blend - what else can you do with it besides take it when you begin to feel sick? Oh so very much! It's such a sweet and savory and spicy, making it a great blend in many recipes.

  • Use when making a vinaigrette dressing. It adds a nice warmth with just that little touch of sweetness.
  • Making some Bloody Mary's? Add a splash of this fiery blend.
  • When I'm making taco's or macaroni & pasta, I like to add a splash to boost the flavor.
  • It is fabulous in a marinade!
  • Use the apple cider to make an amazing barbecue sauce.
  • Add a splash with a little extra honey to some seltzer and you have a surprisingly refreshing and revitalizing soda.

Let your imagination go and you can find dozens of ways to make fire cider a healthy and tasty part of your cooking routine.
