Sun loving this summer
August 2013

Slainte  !

How is summer zipping by so quickly? The garden is busting at the seams - with lovely harvest and lovely weeds. It's the rag tag time when the garden is doing a little bit better than time allows. But that's the joy of summer! May yours continue to shine bright.

We're Still Giving Back to the Beach

Island Beach State Park, that is. We've decided to extend our plans for donating to Island Beach State Park until the Beach Plum Festival on September 8th. It's one of our favorite place - great fishing, hiking,  wildlife, boating, sunbathing - it's a little slice of heaven. That slice got slashed up during Sandy. It's open for business, but still needs lots of help. You can find out more about them and volunteer opportunities on their website of Facebook page.

What's Been Cooking

We've been busy this summer, cooking up some great new products. Look for these at out fairs and festival... and check the website soon!

New Scrubs include: Pine Barrens Breeze - a whiff of pine with just a touch of the salty sea.
Green Tea - fresh, light and a invigorating.

We also have a new aromatherapy inhaler: Faoiseamh Pit - Hangover Relief. It won't cure you over indulgence, but it should make it more tolerable.

And the latest addition: Oil of the Robber Clan. But more on that at another time.

Sharing a Nip ... of Catnip

Just the name brings about a vision of slightly stoned cats, doesn't it? Most cats do love their catnip, and my collection are no exception. This picture is of my old boy, Sinbad. He and all the cats love when I cut some catnip from the garden and bring it in to dehydrate.

But they aren't the only ones that love this perennial herb. Catnip is a member of the mint family (it's sometimes called catmint). It get be an almost invasive grower in the garden. Bees and butterflies love the flowers. This little plant is another vitamin and mineral packed garden wonder. It is very
high in Chromium, Iron, Manganese, Potassium,  Selenium, with Calcium, Magnesium,Phosphorus, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin A and some Folate (B9), Niacin (B3), Silicon, Sodium, Sulfur,Thiamine (B1), Vitamins B5, B6, B12, C, and Zinc. With all that, it's worth taking some yourself!

I like using dried catnip in a nice sleepy time tea. It can have a bitter taste, but you don't need a lot. Fresh is best if you have it, but a pinch of dried to some nice chamomile acts as a relaxing nervine. It's also a lovely gentle herb for digestive problems. Catnip even can help with menstrual cramps.

Catnip is also safe for children and will aid with colic, fevers and diarrhea.

It's also a wonderful addition to sleep pillows. The hydrosol of catnip makes for a nice and calming linen spray.

If mosquitoes are irking you this year, catnip essential oil has been shown to be more effective than DEET. That's why we add it to our Bugger Off Spray.

Even if you don't have cats, catnip is a wonderful addition to your herb garden.
