 Celebrating Full On Summer
July 2013

Slainte  !

The Dog Days of Summer are almost upon us... although it's felt pretty hot and steamy already this summer. To beat the hear, stay hydrated, take care of your skin, and eat plenty of the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables available at this time of year.

And have fun! Go for a walk in a nice shaded wood, splash in a lake or in the surf. Stop by one of the fairs that we'll be at, or any other one that interests you. Make it a summer to remember,

And take time to watch the fireflies.

We're Giving Back to the Beach

Island Beach State Park, that is. During the month of July, we'll be donating a portion of all sales to Island Beach State Park. It's one of our favorite place - great fishing, hiking, Island Beach State Park Fox wildlife, boating, sunbathing - it's a little slice of heaven. That slice got slashed up during Sandy. It's open for business, but still needs lots of help. You can find out more about them and volunteer opportunities on their website of Facebook page.

Fresh and Fun in July

July is a celebration of out door living. It's National Blueberry MonMmmmmm Blueberriesth. Domesticated blueberries were first bred in Whitesbog, NJ.  Not only are they full of antioxidants - they're darn yummy!

It's also National Ice Cream Month!! I'm a sucker for a good local ice cream shop, and I'm also a fan of making my own. You can find some great recipes for home made ice cream here.

National Recreation and Parks Month is also in July. It's the perfect time to explore the wonderful parks and open spaces we still have in New Jersey. One of our favorites is Island Beach State Park, which we're hoping to help out this month. There's so many of them. What are some of your favorites?

Where We'll Be - Come and See!

Keeping it Cool as a Cucumber

We have always been cucumber fans in our house. A freshly sliced cucumber with a little garlic salt is the perfect treat while watching movies on a hot summer day. And my grandmother made a killer cucumber salad that is a family favorite.

Cucumbers are best in the summer, fresh from the farm or off the vine if you're lucky enough to be able to grow them without a gopher or rabbit stealing them. They are mostly water, and are a good source of B and C vitamins as well as silica, calcium, folate, potassium and magnesium.

For an amazingly invigorating and refreshing summer drink, thinly slice a medium cucumber and a medium lemon and put them into a large pitcher. Add a small amount of grated or chopped ginger and a sprig or two of mint or lemon verbena. Fill with water and let sit in the fridge for a few hours. It is wonderful. I'll keep topping off the pitcher with water for a few days and then make a new batch. A perfect cooler for after a gardening work out.

Cucumbers are also good for your outsides. Rub a cucumber skin on a burn to soothe it. Putting a few slices on your eyes really does help reduce puffiness. That's why we include it in our Bright Eyes Mela Tae.

Be one with the cucumber - and keep it cool this summer.
