 Let the summer fun begin
June 2013

Slainte  !

Can it be that summer is sneaking up on us so quickly? The Jersey Shore is slowly coming back, at least the seasonal shops and businesses. Fairs and festivals fill each weekend. And the sun shines a little longer every day (at least when it's not raining.) And June is National Rose Month! My roses seem to know it too because they are blooming prolifically.

So celebrate the summer fun commence!

Be On the Skeeter Look Out
We've had a lot of rain lately. I am certainly as tired of it as you, although I do appreciate not having to water the garden. We've also had some very warm  days.
It's time to take some precautions to prevent the bane of the summer from ruining your fun - the mosquito.
It doesn't take much water at all to create a breeding ground for the little blood suckers. Search around your yard and property to empty out old garden pots, crevices, gutters, water catching plastic. Empty out all that you can to reduce the risk of the pesky biters.

Jersey Strong - Recovering step by step
Spinach & Banana Salad
Yes, it sounds strange. But trust me it's yummy.

For the salad, you'll need ....

1 medium, ripe banana, cut into 1/2 to 1 inch slices

-1 cup of baby spinach leaves

-1/4 cup sliced mushrooms

-a hand full of pine nuts (optional)

For the dressing, you'll need...

-4 tablespoons apricot jam and add a dash of hot sauce or a small amount of diced hot pepper of your choice.

-1/2 cup plain yogurt

-salt and pepper to taste

Toss the salad ingredients together. In a glass bowl or glass measuring cup, warm the apricot jam on low for about 1 minute. Watch it as microwave temperatures vary. Carefully remove the bowl (use a pot holder as the glass will be hot).
Whisk the jam to keep in lose.
Pour the jam over the salad and toss.
Next add the yogurt to the salad and toss.
Add salt and pepper to taste.

June is National Rose Month

A few rosy tidbits for you to ponder as you admire and breathe in the beauty of the rose:

  • Roses are native to America. On 1987, President Ronald Regan made the USA's National Floral emblem the rose.
  •  On the wall of Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany grows the oldest living rose. It's thought to be over 1,000 years old and even survived bombing in WWII.  Rugosa Rose
  • In the Middle Ages it was customary for wealthy people to add rose petals and rose oil to their baths.
  • Also in the Middle Ages, noble women carried bouquets of roses to cover up their body odor. This tells you a lot about the Middle Ages.
  • Shakespeare refers to roses more than 50 times in his writings.
  • Archeologists have found fossilized rose remains that are over 34 million years old.
  • Plants such as such as apples, apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, pears, raspberries, and strawberries, almonds, and ornamental trees and shrubs (such as  meadowsweets, photinias, firethorns, rowans, and hawthorns) are all part of the same family as roses - Rosaceae.
  • Rugosa Rose Hips Rose hips are the fruit of the rose, and are high in Vitamins A, B3, C, D, and E as well as Zinc and other minerals.
  • Tea made from leaves, petals or hips are shown to help with cold and flu symptoms including bronchial issues and runny noses.

Look for more rosy tales and stories on our blog throughout June.

We've Got You Covered in Roses
Speaking of fabulously rosy June, we at Celtic Chairde have created a number of rose based products that will have you feeling rosy, soft and spectacular.
Rose 'n' Dew Face Spritz - soothing, softening and refreshing on a hot summer day. It's made with rose hydrosol and rose honey. Especially nice if stored in the refrigerator.
Rose and Dew Sugar Scrub - Sugar infused with rose geraniums,  honey infused with roses and other natural ingredients will infuse you with a soft, sensual feel.
Moonlight and Roses Body Butter - Divine creaminess melts into your skin, softening like a rose petal. And the fragrance is like a walk in a moonlit rose garden.
Honey & Roses Bath Vinegar - Vinegar is so good for your skin, and this splash for your bath is infused with roses with a dash of honey.

My roses inspire (and sometimes frustrate) me. We'll be looking for more ways to bring the roses to you.
