A Message from the Chair

Hon. Cara Lee T. Neville

Chair, The Fellows

What an honor and what a year it has been! I am pleased to report that, in an effort to advance our organizational goals, during the past year we gathered 50 bright and forward thinking Fellows to plan for the future of The Fellows in our Strategic Planning Committee.  This group has provided tremendous insight and their considerable efforts will help the Fellows for many, many years.*See list below. Additionally, we now have five new liaisons to ABA affiliated organizations which will make us a more diverse and inclusive organization. **See list below.

Locally, our awesome State Chairs have provided more educational and social events throughout the country than ever before. We have added a record number of new Fellows this year while maintaining the quality of our honorary membership and in so doing becoming more diverse, inclusive, and international. We have provided international forums for American Bar Foundation (ABF) researchers and social venues for our international Fellows to exchange their views, providing terrific value. Internally, we have started down the road to improved interaction and communication with our members through new video conferencing capabilities and other technological advances, all with the support of our outstanding staff.

It is important to remember however, that this is only possible with your continued financial support. What I would challenge each of us to do is two-fold:

First, if you have not yet become a Life Fellow please fulfill your pledge quickly so you can join us for our exclusive Life Fellows Champagne Reception at our annual meeting in San Francisco and if you are already a Life Fellow please continue your annual contribution to become a Sustaining Life Fellow, or make a pledge to become a Life Patron Fellow! Click here to contribute

Secondly, please continue your support of the Fellows by NOMINATING outstanding lawyers, judges, academics, and your own law partners with whom you would want to share the honor of being a Fellow. Click here to honor a colleague with a Fellows nomination.

It is only through your involvement that we can continue to support the research of the Foundation which is so important to our profession.

I am extremely grateful for the honor bestowed upon me to chair such a prestigious organization and for the opportunity to work with such amazing Fellows Officers and staff. We had a record number of Fellows attending our events at Midyear. I look forward to breaking even more records and seeing you soon at our fun events during the Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Life Fellow Spotlight
David Brink
Minnesota Life Fellow
David Brink, Minnesota Life Fellow, was a lawyer at the firm that is now Dorsey & Whitney. Mr. Brink served as president of the American Bar Association for a term in 1981-82. He is also past president of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Hennepin County Bar Association.

Q: You've been a Fellow for almost 50 years. What does being a Fellow mean to you?
A: It means a lot to me that there is a group devoted to the study and betterment of the profession.

Q: Where were you born and raised?
A: Born and raised in Minneapolis and nearby University Grove, just north of St. Paul.

Q: What type of law did you practice, and how did you become interested in that particular area?
A: Primarily Trusts, Estates, Estate Planning and Tax, though also in varied fields of Litigation and International Law. I was an associate assigned to assist Harry A. Blackmun when he was in private practice with what is now Dorsey & Whitney. I became Blackmun's lawyer when he became a Judge of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals and later Justice of the US Supreme Court. I served as head of the firm's Washington office for two or three years.

Q: If you had decided not to pursue a career in law, what would you have done?
A: An alternative career might have been to teach English Literature and Composition in a pleasant small college and write novels (and later poetry) in my spare time.

Q: What was the last book you read?
A: The last book I RE-read was my mother's classic, Caddie Woodlawn.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: In my free time I work in Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, Bar Associations and other organizations devoted to bettering the lives and performance of lawyers, judges and law students. At about the age of 88 I took up poetry in a serious way. I read it, studied it, began to write and teach it, formed poetry clubs and did readings.  In February 2016, I published a book of my poems entitled Beyond the Delta, which has been very well received.  I am working on another book and tending to some disabilities that seem to come with advanced years. I will be 97 later this month. Claim still to possess 51% of my marbles.

"The Future of Latinos in the United States: Law, Opportunity, and Mobility"
2016 Midwest Roundtable in Chicago

The American Bar Foundation (ABF) hosted the first regional roundtable for the new major research project, "The Future of Latinos in the United States: Law, Opportunity, and Mobility," on June 6-7, 2016 at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in Chicago. The initiative is led by a group of nationally recognized scholars under the direction of Rachel F. Moran, the inaugural William H. Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law at the ABF, and dean emerita and Michael J. Connell Distinguished Professor of Law at UCLA Law School; and Robert Nelson, director emeritus and the MacCrate Research Chair in the Legal Profession at the ABF; and professor of sociology and law at Northwestern University

The roundtable brought together leading members of the Latino community from Chicago and the Midwest, including law and non-law scholars, legal advocates, community activists, politicians, media representatives, foundation representatives, and emerging leaders, to imagine the different futures for Latinos that are possible by 2050. The sessions explored vitally important issues that will shape the prospects for Latinos in the region in coming years, such as immigration, education, economic opportunity, and civic and political engagement.

Along with the Midwest roundtable in Chicago, the ABF will host regional roundtables in the west, south (Texas), southeast (Miami), and northeast (Yale University). These roundtables will culminate in a national summit on these issues.

In addition, a Network for Justice Planning Summit: Creating Legal and Legislative Support for Latino Communities will be held on November 7, 2016 at the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center, generously supported by the California Bar Foundation.

The roundtable was supported by The Chicago Community TrustNorthwestern Pritzker School of Law, and Northwestern's Office of the Provost.

For more information on the research project, please visit the "Future of Latinos" Facebook and Twitter page.

2016 Montgomery Summer Research Diversity Fellows

From left to right: Francesca Hidalgo-Wohlleben, Daniella Zessoules, Bara Ahmad and Kavya Rallabhandi

The American Bar Foundation (ABF) has welcomed four undergraduate students as the 2016 recipients of the Montgomery Summer Research Diversity Fellowship (SRDF) in Law and Social Science. Each year the ABF sponsors a program of summer research fellowships to interest undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds in pursuing graduate study in the social sciences. The 2016 fellows were chosen from a highly competitive group of over 200 applicants and exemplify excellence in their undergraduate career. The 2016 fellows are Bara Ahmad, Francesca Hidalgo-Wohlleben, Kavya Rallabhandi, and Daniella Zessoules.

Over the next few months, each fellow will work closely with an ABF Research Professor on the design and implementation of a research project. While the students will work primarily as research assistants, they will have the opportunity to attend a series of seminars conducted by ABF Faculty, program alumni, and practitioners in the legal system in Chicago who acquaint the students with their research and work.

The Montgomery Summer Research Diversity Fellowship in Law and Social Science is supported by generous grants from the Kenneth F. & Harle G. Montgomery Foundation, Law School Admission Council, and AT&T.

2016 Conference of the Research Group on Legal Diversity

"Metrics, Diversity, and Law"
Presenter Rima Alaily, Microsoft Corporation

The Research Group on Legal Diversity (RGLD) held its 2016 Conference in May, dedicated to the theme of "Metrics, Diversity, and Law". Presentations focused on the key role of metrics in law and other professions, in the decision-making processes of gatekeepers at critical junctures throughout careers, and in drawing conclusions about successes and failures in efforts to advance diversity and inclusion. The first three conferences of the RGLD, held in 2012, 2013, and 2014, presented original research on diversity and inequality in the legal profession, legal institutions, and other scientific and professional fields. The takeaways from these conferences informed parts of the book, Diversity in Practice, edited by Spencer Headworth, Robert L. Nelson, Ronit Dinovitzer, and David B. Wilkins.

Established in 2011, The Research Group on Legal Diversity is a network of scholars convened by the American Bar Foundation to conduct empirical research on diversity in the legal profession and institutions of justice, as well as the impact of diversity on legal processes and legal institutions. It is co-directed by Robert Nelson, Ronit Dinovitzer, and David Wilkins.

Thank you to our academic partners at Northwestern University, Pritzker School of Law, Office of the Provost, Kellogg School of Management and The Graduate School, and to our corporate partners Microsoft Corporation, Allstate Insurance Company and Kirkland & Ellis LLP.

Fellows CLE Research Seminar: Civil Rights Advocacy: Past, Present and Future

8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Civil rights have long been a critical part of the American system of justice. From struggles for racial and gender equality to the more recent expansion of equal rights for the LGBTQ community and people with disabilities, rights claims have been central to the American struggle for equality, but their meaning has never been stable. This panel will take a wide view of civil rights: how they're conceived of, enforced, ignored, and contested, and the ways they sometimes develop in directions their framers and advocates never imagined. Moderated by award-winning legal historian Dylan C. Penningroth, this panel will bring together scholars and civil rights lawyers to discuss the past, present, and future of U.S. civil rights.

Following the reception, an International Fellows Dinner took place at The Hotel Majestic Roma.

During the Forum, the panel, "The Statues or Statutes of Rome: Which Will Last Longer? The Successes and Failures of the Rome Statute after 14 Years," featured many members of the Fellows and ABF community. The Honorable Cara Lee T. Neville, Chair of The Fellows, served as moderator and it included John Hagan, ABF research professor; the Honorable John R. Tunheim, Minnesota Fellows State Co-Chair and Fellow; and Colonel Linda Murnane, Ohio Life Fellow, as speakers.

Between April and June, more than 600 Fellows updated their profiles and were entered to win 2 tickets to an upcoming Fellows Opening Reception.

The winner of the drawing was Seattle attorney
