Paula Boggs with the Paula Boggs Band
|
Paula Boggs
Washington Life Patron Fellow
Q: Where were you born and raised?
A: I was born in Washington, DC and raised in Virginia, Germany and Italy. My parents met as Howard University students and then my dad taught biology at HBCU Virginia State University. When my parents divorced, my mom and four kids moved to Europe where she taught the children of US military personnel.
Q: What type of law did you practice, and how did you become interested in it?
A: I started my law career in the Pentagon as an Army officer doing administrative law and treaty work. A White House assignment exposed me to litigation work and that's what I did to some degree from that point until retiring from Starbucks in 2012. As an in-house lawyer for 15 years I performed and supervised the practice of many types of domestic and international law.
Q: If you did not decide to go into law, what would you have done?
A: I was on a path to become a diplomat before choosing law school. Before that, I considered a career in music.
Q: We are so excited the Paula Boggs Band will be playing at the Opening Reception at the Midyear Meeting in San Diego. Who were some of your early musical influences?
A: My early influences included the folk music I heard in Catholic school and church, including the Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, Judy Collins and Bob Dylan, the music in my house, like Sam & Dave, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, and the gospel music I heard in my mom's African Methodist Episcopal church. Q: If you could have dinner with anyone who would it be?
A: I'd love having dinner with South African retired bishop Desmond Tutu.
Q: Anything else you'd like to share with us?
A: Paula Boggs Band is very much looking forward to playing for the ABF Fellows!

Fellows CLE Research Seminar: "The Future of Latinos in the United States: Law, Opportunity and Mobility"
| |
A Project of the American Bar Foundation
Co-Directed by Rachel F. Moran and
Robert L. Nelson
This year at the 2016 Midyear meeting in San Diego, the Fellows CLE Research Seminar will feature a presentation and discussion on the American Bar Foundation (ABF) Research Project, "The Future of Latinos in the United States: Law, Opportunity and Mobility." The project is co-directed by Rachel F. Moran, inaugural holder of the William H. Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law at the ABF and Dean Emerita and Michael J. Connell Distinguished Professor of Law at UCLA Law, and Robert L. Nelson, MacCrate Research Chair in the Legal Profession and Past Director at the ABF and Professor of Sociology and Law at Northwestern University.
According to a brief paper written about the project by Moran and Nelson, "'The Future of Latinos in the United States: Law, Opportunity and Mobility' is a nation-wide, interdisciplinary research initiative devoted to understanding the current condition of Latinos in the United States, the structural barriers that impede full equality and integration for this emerging population, and the sites of intervention that promise to be most impactful in promoting opportunity and mobility through law and policy." Similar to the project itself, the purpose of the program is to imagine the different futures of Latinos that are possible by 2050, when the Latino population is projected to account for 30% of the nation's population.
Moran, Nelson and Luz Herrera, Assistant Dean for Clinical Education, Experiential Learning, and Public Service at UCLA Law and California Fellow, will be presenters at the program. The program will be moderated by Manny Medrano, a trial lawyer and broadcast journalist, and include a discussion with four panelists. Panelists include: Dean R. Alexander Acosta, Chair of the ABA Commission on Hispanic Legal Rights & Responsibilities, Florida Fellow and Dean at the College of Law at Florida International University; Sonia Gonzales, Executive Director of the California Bar Association; Professor David Gutierrez, professor and Academic Senate Distinguished Teacher at UC San Diego; and Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and California Fellow.
The Fellow's CLE is co-sponsored by the ABA Center for Racial and Ethnic Diversity, ABA Commission on Hispanic Rights & Responsibilities, ABA Commission on Immigration, ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession, ABA Diversity & Inclusion 360 Commission, ABA Young Lawyers Division, and the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice.
