Having the Last Word

For three years, day after day, ABF Research Professor, Susan P. Shapiro, and a medical social worker observed life-and-death decision making in two intensive care units on behalf of patients without decision making capacity.  A little more than a third of these patients had reportedly completed an advance directive-either a durable power of attorney for health care and/or a living will - however, few of these directives ever appeared in the patient's hospital chart.  A new smartphone app helps to solve this problem.  Read about the  My Health Care Wishes app developed by the American Bar Association's Commission on Law and Aging and learn more about Shapiro's findings.

The referenced article received the 2013 John J. Reagan Writing Award of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys for the best original article published in

NAELA Journal during the previous year.

New Book Collaboration by ABF Leader and Faculty: Last Plane Out of Saigon

Richard Pena, Past ABF President and Past Chair of The Fellows, and ABF Research Professor John Hagan have collaborated on an important new book, part personal account, part social history on the final, harrowing days of the Vietnam War.  Read the press release here

Wald and Professor Deborah L. Rhode with the 2014 Fellows Outstanding Service and Scholar Awards respectively.

Please assist us in continuing this tradition by nominating a deserving candidate for a 2015 Fellows Award. Click here for more information.  Nominations must be received by September 12, 2014.

Introducing the new Fellows Emblem

We are delighted to share with you our new Fellows emblem, ready to display on your firm or personal website!

Please email the Fellows Staff with the subject line "ABF Emblem" to receive a copy of the image and display instructions.

The ABF's primary funding is provided by the

American Bar Endowment (ABE), an organization established by the American Bar Association to advance research and education on the administration of justice. The ABE is a charitable organization that provides opportunities for all ABA Members to get quality, affordable insurance for attorneys, through trusted insurers, while giving back to the good works of the legal profession.
