Laid off?   Steps to stay motivated after a layoff.
by: Pamela Ware

Announcements of new businesses moving to the area, expansions of existing businesses and dips in unemployment rates make the 24 hour news cycle. Parallel to news of better times ahead and job opportunities on the horizon are announcements of businesses downsizing. Excitement and gloom- now what?

Albert Einstein believed in being optimistic despite trying circumstances when he said, "In the middle of a difficulty lies opportunity."Losing a job, particularly through no fault of your own, can be difficult to process. Although challenging, moving forward is key to succeeding. Consider these steps to bounce back from a layoff.

  • Step 1: Know your options regarding unemployment benefits, company severance packages, healthcare insurance and resources available for dislocated workers
  • Step 2: Get help and skill build. Use your down time to work on a resume, brush up on your interviewing and computer skills. If needed, consult an employment specialist for help.
  • Step 3: Act. Visit the Alabama Career Center. Job seekers have access to a variety of services under one roof including Mobile Works' training scholarships in aviation, healthcare, maritime, manufacturing, etc.  Job search assistance is also available through the Alabama Department of Labor. Prepare for your GED through Bishop State's Adult Basic Education and seasonal worker transition services for migrant workers are available through Telamon.     Furthermore, workers with disabilities can receive specialized job-related training and assistance through the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and veterans can receive employment search assistance from veterans employment service representatives on site.  Additional services available to job seekers include:
  • job readiness classes on resume preparation, interviewing, dressing for success and financial literacy
  • computers with internet access for a self-directed job search
  • telephone, copy and fax machines on hand to communicate with prospective employers
  • unemployment compensation information
  • weekly job fairs
  • businesses have access to on-site conference rooms for interviewing, free internet listings services for job openings, free recruitment and screening of job applicants
  • access to labor market information
  • printed job resource materials
To learn more about the services available, please call 251.461.4146 or visit www.mobile-works.org.
