Relax. Regroup. Retrain.
Keys to your job search
By: Pam Ware

According to the Department of Labor, employment opportunities are on the rise. Locally, announcements are made regarding new businesses locating to the area and hiring from existing businesses are on the rise.

Yet, some job seekers still find it difficult to secure steady employment.  As Albert Einstein stated, "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." Use this temporary pause in employment to relax, regroup and retrain. Consider the following:

  • Relax and breath.  Losing a job or having difficulty finding a job may not be a time to relax. However, take a moment to catch your breath and map out a plan to move forward. Explore opportunities in regards to social services, unemployment benefits (contact the Alabama Department of Labor at 1- 866-234-5382 or apply online by clicking here), severance pay and extended healthcare benefits from your former employer and/or check out the Affordable Healthcare Act website by clicking here. Likewise,
  • Regroup and be patient. Don't let the job search process overwhelm you or weigh you down. A successful job search takes time, energy and preparation.  Check out resources online for career planning and finding employment (click here). Research and develop a plan for your job search. When searching for a job, it's important to consider the location of the job, work hours, type of work and how the new job will impact your family time and activities most important to you. Also, job seekers are encouraged to visit their local career center to access to a variety of programs and services. Jjob fairs, job search assistance, job readiness workshops are available at no cost.  Jobseekers can access computers to do a job search and write resumes. Phones and fax and copy machines available for use as well.
  • Retrain and get the job. Training opportunities exist for job seekers to learn a new skill (click here). If you are not working or have a job that offers no opportunity for growth and advancement, consider training scholarships in aviation, maritime, transportation, healthcare, advanced manufacturing and construction. Get the skills. Get the Job.
