MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, supplemented by completion of trade school or apprentice program in heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and a minimum of one year journeyman level experience as a heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
 
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Installs, maintains and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; installs, maintains, rewires and repairs low voltage electrical and pneumatic control devices and circuits; installs, maintains and repairs fans, pumps, motors, centrifugal machines and other related machinery and equipment; oversees building operations as assigned; supervises employees as assigned; calibrates thermostats to regulate operation of HVAC systems; designs ventilating systems; recovers refrigerant during the maintenance, service or repair of equipment; estimates materials and personnel needed to repair equipment; inspects jobs for workmanship and completeness; welds parts and refrigeration lines; operates vehicles safely; completes required reports; assists in the training of personnel; maintains a clean and safe work environment; performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and a minimum of one year experience at the level of a Treatment Plant Operator Trainee; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Mobile, Prichard and Saraland - possession of a Grade III Certificate in Water or Wastewater Treatment, preferably both, except for assignment to the Stickney Filtration Plant (Moffat Road) and the Myers Filtration Plant (Hubert Pierce Road) which requires a Grade IV Water Certificate.  Bayou La Batre - possession of a Grade II Certificate in Water Treatment or Grade III Certificate in Wastewater Treatment.  Other smaller jurisdictions require possession of a Grade II Certification in Water or Wastewater Treatment or both. Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:  Good knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in water filtration or wastewater treatment plants; good knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation of large electric motors, pumps, chemical feeders and other electrical and mechanical equipment; good knowledge of laboratory procedures; some knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance and of equipment and tools used for such maintenance; ability to diagnose and remedy abnormalities in the routine operation of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment; ability to operate machinery and equipment; ability to read meters and charts accurately; ability to maintain records and reports; ability to understand and follow detailed laboratory and plant operating procedures; ability to perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately; ability to work under dangerous conditions; ability to operate automotive and other equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, dischargers and the general public.

Analyzes problems with vehicles and equipment to determine repairs needed; overhauls engines; cleans parts to check for wear and damage; repairs hydraulic systems; inspects, adjusts and replaces valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies, ignition, lubrication, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems; adjusts connecting rods and main bearings; repairs or overhauls brake systems, transmissions, differentials, final drives and front and rear axles; inspects and repairs electrical equipment, generators, alternators, distributors, magnetos and starter motors; revamps ignition and lighting systems; operates shop testing equipment; repairs motorcycles, small engines, service engines, tractors and attached implements, draglines, motor patrols, bulldozers, gradeall machines and other equipment; repairs and maintains police and fire vehicles and equipment; test drives vehicles to insure proper operation; does body work, welding and incidental painting; replaces glass; operates tow truck when necessary; repairs equipment in the field as necessary; repairs hydraulic systems; cleans work area; performs related work as required.

This service is provided by community organizations that have IRS trained and certified volunteers. Using this free program means you receive a bigger tax refund.  
 

Volunteer Tax Preparation: Your community has several FREE volunteer tax preparation locations that you can find by dialing United Way's 2-1-1 number or visiting www.irs.gov, keyword VITA.


 

  • Organizations like Goodwill Easter Seals, Mobile Community Action Agency, RSVP, United Way of Southwest AL, Boat People SOS and others provide this valuable service. Qualification for this program is total household income of $54,000 or less.
  • Volunteers are IRS trained and certified to provide you a quality tax return at no cost. Both federal and state tax returns are completed at preparation sites
 

Free Access to Online Tax Software: If you do your own tax return or want to do it for the first time there is a program that provides access to FREE brand name online tax preparation software.

  • Qualifications to use the site are you must have an e-mail address and total household income is $62,000 or less. Both federal and state returns are completed and e-filed at no cost to those within income limit.
