Duties: Inspects businesses for possession of proper privilege and business licenses; verifies names, addresses, dates, classifications and fees; looks for new businesses subject to taxation; gives notices of licenses required; follows up to see that proper licenses have been purchased; assists merchants in filling out forms and applications; prepares form letters on licensing requirements; keeps records of businesses and prepares new records when additional businesses are established; issues citations to unlicensed or inadequately licensed businesses or occupations; investigates complaints concerning proper licensing; collects funds for bad checks and delinquent accounts; conducts special investigations; takes neighborhood polls in connection with applications for liquor, beer, wine, pool rooms, dance halls and other special licenses; works special assignments such as Mardi Gras, County fair, auctions and special sales; checks construction sites to see that contractors are properly licensed; collects delinquent taxes; inspects mobile homes for compliance with state registration laws; collects taxes for special events; performs related work as required.


 

Minimum Qualification Requirements:   Completion of two years of college course work in finance, accounting or closely related courses, and a minimum of one year experience which indicates ability to deal firmly and tactfully with business owners or managers, preferably one year experience in financial investigations or collection activities; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
 
Special Requirements: Must be willing to furnish own automobile and must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.

Good knowledge of accounting principles and practices; good knowledge of business English; some knowledge of investigative techniques; ability to acquire a good knowledge of privilege and license tax ordinances; ability to acquire good knowledge of local geography and street locations; ability to deal tactfully and firmly with merchants; ability to use modern office equipment; ability to speak clearly and spell correctly; ability to keep accurate records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, other employees and the general public
