Should I attend a job fair?

By:  Pam Ware

Back in the day, a smile, a firm handshake and a brief conversation about past work history and how your skills can help a prospective employer was enough for a hiring manager to offer conditional employment. Now, most employers require that you express interest of employment via resume and/or online applications. Yet, some job seekers may question whether or not to attend a job fair if most companies require you submit resumes, applications and other pertinent information online.

If you're seeking employment and have the opportunity to attend a job fair or hiring event, the answer should be a resounding YES.  Never miss an opportunity to connect with employers and consider the following when attending a job fair:

It's all about you: Leave the kids, friends and family at home. Always engage an employer alone so you can put your best foot forward. Family and friends may be a distraction.

Do your homework: Visit a company's website and research current job openings. If a job of interest in listed, talk specifically about that job to a prospective employer. Also, tailor your resume to fit the advertised position. Pay attention to the job description and qualifications. For example, if there is a job listing in customer service, your resume should reflect some customer service experience.

Dress for the job you want: Never attend a job fair without being properly dressed. It's better to be over dressed than under dressed. It only takes a few seconds for an employer to decide whether or not an employer will engage you. Leave the flip flops, cutoff jeans, t-shirts, tight fitting, wrinkled clothes at home. Dressing appropriately shows respect for the employer and demonstrates you are serious about working.

Be prompt: If at all possible, arrive at the within an hour of the job fair/hiring event start time. Employers are more focused and receptive to sharing information about the company. Also, employers may have additional staff on hand to help process the crowd. Arriving ten minutes before the job fair ends may imply that you're a last minute type of person.

Stay focused:  Remember, it's not about you and your goals when conversing with a prospective employer. You should focus on how your skills can be an asset for that company. For example, if you have customer service experience, share how your exceptional customer service skills resulted in increased sales for your employer.

Don't overshare: Stay away from language that implies you're desperate for employment. Saying-"I really need this job, because I have exhausted my savings and don't know what I am going to do," will not elicit sympathy from an employer. Your statement may imply to an employer that you are not one that can handle stressful situations and may crack under pressure.
