Is a second career for me?

                By: Pam Ware

One of my co-workers recently announced his retirement. In fact, this is his second retirement. Of course, when I asked why did he retire from his first career and start a second career or "encore career" as affectionately called by others he stated, "I wanted to stay busy and boost my retirement income."

In fact, first time retirees have echoed my co-workers responses recently. Some have even acknowledged that they chose a "safe" career as a means to provide for their families. However, they find themselves wanting to do something different with their encore career but haven't a clue as to what they could do. If a second career is an option after retirement, consider the following:

Self-assessment: Everyone hates to dig deep. However, take time to really examine your skill sets, your strengths and what you can bring to the workforce. Family time, physical abilities and other factors should be considered when choosing a second career. If you need help, visit www.myskillsmyfuture.com  to take advantage of FREE resources to help you find careers based on your skill sets or passion. Also, check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook found at http://www.bls.gov/ooh/. The handbook describes work conditions, education and training needed for specific occupations, pay and employment projections for specific occupations.

Follow your passion: This could be an opportunity for a do over.

This may be an opportunity to do something you're really passionate about. Also, Marci Alboher, author of The Encore Career Handbook states "older adults want to remain connected, relevant, useful and engaged". There are many training programs that could provide financial assistance to help you learn new skills to compete for jobs. Please visit www.mobile-works.org  for training in Mobile County or check out training funded by the Workforce Investment Act at area Career Centers. Also check out www.encore.org . Encore careers combine social impact with personal meaning and continued income, enabling people who have finished their midlife careers to put their passion and skills to work for the greater good. Also, Alabama Joblink is a great resource to connect jobseekers with job openings in the area.  There is no cost to register with Joblink. The site can link jobseekers to other online job boards, build your resume as well as provide alternate language translations.  As always, never pay anyone to find you a job.

Stay positive: Avoid self- defeating rhetoric such as "I'm too old" or "no one will hire me if I start a new career at my age". Concentrate instead on assets you could bring to a prospective employer such as your experience and flexibility.
