What does your personal brand say about you?
Advances in technology have given Americans a new way of looking at the world. We're able to see the world in real time, talk with relatives and friends around the globe and share experiences with strangers. Thanks to social media and various mobile applications, our thoughts, our location, our actions- a rant or special moments can be captured. Nothing is considered private.
In fact, when searching for a job, it's important to note that technology has changed how we seek employment and how prospective employers evaluate candidates for job openings. Remember, those rants, those photos and special moments may be available to a prospective employer with a simple click of the mouse.
Therefore, think before you hit the submit button to apply for that job. Your personal brand (qualifications, behavior, beliefs, etc.) should be parallel to the brand of the prospective employer. Most employers will hire job seekers who best reflect their ideals and goals. The most fitting example of a behavior and qualifications mismatch occurred in an episode of "Undercover Boss". This particular episode featured a young man working at a restaurant. He was asked to train a new employee (who happened to be the company CEO in disguise). During the training session the employee complained about how irritated he was with customers and their kids. His behavior was so bad that the employee was terminated immediately. The employer went on to explain that their sole existence as a company depends on customer satisfaction. His actions, although he was qualified to do the job, did not match the vision and mission of the company.
Remember, before you send out that resume or complete that job application, hit the delete button on questionable posts, tweets, photos or videos. |
