Job seeker tip of the week: Be Ready!

Judges on talent shows such as America's Got Talent, The Voice and American Idol frequently stress to participants vying for that coveted spot to be ready at a moment's notice to sing. Excuses such as I'm hoarse and I'm too nervous to sing are not accepted. Likewise, job seekers should always be ready to interview with a prospective employer at a moment's notice or possibly an impromptu interview. You may get one chance to make a great impression. Therefore, if you're asked to interview at a moment's notice -don't frown, just nail the interview. Consider the following:

  • Use your elevator speech. Recite within 30 to 60 seconds why you're the candidate for the job.
  • Focus on your key skills and accomplishments. Make the parallel between your experience and the qualifications the prospective employer desires.
  • Be brief. An impromptu interview is just that-on the spur of the moment. The prospective employer may decide to offer a formal interview based on your responses.
