Job seeker tip of the week

by: Pamela Ware

Patience is key to your job search

When searching for a job, being patient can be hard to accept when the bills are due and your savings are dwindling. However, hard it may be to not follow-up again with a perspective employer, you must keep in mind that everyone has a job to do.

Your job as a job seeker is to find employment. The job of a hiring manager is to find the right person for the job. Therefore, a call not returned, a decision to delay filling the job is not a denial. We don't know the back story. For example, a company advertises a job, accepts resumes and may even interview candidates to fill the position. Then, no one is hired. It could mean unforeseen budget concerns or possibly other issues have arose within the company that must be addressed before bringing someone new on board.

If this has happened to you, what you don't want to do is become too persistent in your follow up with a perspective employer that you become a pest. Your actions may have a negative impact on whether you are offered the job.  Likewise, you may be perceived as pushy, overly anxious, impulsive and possibly someone who is not flexible or can't conform to change.

In fact, Mark Goulston writes in his article entitled, "Do You Really Know How People Perceive You? " lists ten common misperceptions that cause dissonance- your perception of self is totally different from how others perceive you.

Therefore, follow the directions and requests of a perspective employer. Impress them with your skills so that you can get the job. Good luck!
