Does applying in person help your chances of landing the job?

Years ago, applying in person was the norm. Most companies would let you complete an application for employment and often grant an impromptu interview if the hiring manager or owner was available. The new normal is completing applications online. However, some companies will allow for applicants to apply in person. If so, seize the opportunity to make a great first impression. Consider the following in order to seal the deal:

  • Make a great first impression: Applying in person gives the employer an opportunity to put a face with a name. You may have the opportunity to briefly share your qualifications and possibly have an on-the-spot interview.
  • Have necessary paperwork:Most job postings will list what's required to be a prospective applicant.  The job description usually lists documentation needed in order to apply for the job opening. Do not attempt to complete a job application in person and not have the appropriate documentation ( i.e. identification, transcript, credentials diplomas or certifications).Likewise, do not ask to borrow pens, phone books, or attempt to look up information using your smartphone. You may be sending a message to a prospective employer that you don't pay attention to detail and you don't follow directions. Consider having a copy of a completed job application available that you could refer to if possible.

  • Appearance counts:If you're applying for a job in person, consider the nature of job and dress accordingly. For example, if you're applying for a job in construction, business casual attire will be more appropriate than wearing a suit and tie. Likewise, if you are applying for a job in food service or healthcare, wearing bulky jewelry, high heels, long fingernails or heavy make-up may not be appropriate. Your appearance should not be a distraction and wearing such items may be considered a safety hazard.
