What to do when school is out?

Working and relaxation is always tops of the list of things to do during the summer months. Relaxing is the easy part. Yet, finding a summer job may prove difficult, but it's not impossible. When searching for jobs consider the following:

Find something you like to do: A specific interest or hobby can actually turn into a job. For example, if video games are a passion, consider finding employment at a store that specializes in video games (i.e. Game Stop, Best Buy, etc.). Also, if shopping is a passion, working for a clothing store might be an option. People that are happiest on their jobs are doing something they enjoy. Follow your passion and you can't go wrong. If you're not sure what you like consider www.mynextmove.org.

Volunteer: If skill building and gaining job experience is an option versus solely earning a paycheck, consider volunteering. Volunteering offers a "low-risk opportunity" to gain valuable work experience and establish solid references and contacts. Likewise, volunteering demonstrates community awareness of social issues and verifies that you actually possess the skills needed to perform certain job duties.  It's a win-win situation! Visit Hands on South Alabama at www.handsonal.org or your local United Way Agency at www.uwswa.org to learn about volunteer opportunities in your community.

Tap into that entrepreneurial spirit: Consider creating your own job. Some of the most profitable businesses have started from a basic idea to fill a need. You can earn money doing everyday chores. Consider cutting grass and lawn maintenance. During the summer month's people may consider hiring someone to maintain their yards due to the hot temperatures. Likewise, youth could charge a fee to run errands, wash and detail cars light housekeeping, tutoring, taking care of animals, baby sitting, assisting the elderly, house sitting, etc. for neighbors, relatives, family friends and associates. Additionally, a youth's availability and flexibility during the summer could be a plus to parents wanting their children to participate in various activities and summer day camp programs. Oftentimes, special camps for younger kids typically don't coincide with parents working a standard 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. work schedule. Most camps may begin around 9 a.m. and end around 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.

Where to look: Check out classified ads, professional associations, non-profit agencies, temporary employment agencies, internet job boards, churches, local daycare centers, fast food restaurants, hotels, museums, entertainment centers for kids (i.e. Pump it Up, Chuck E. Cheese) grocery stores, amusement parks, pools, recreation centers, department stores and tourist attractions.

  • DOL Kids Page website found at www.bls.gov/k12/index.htm offers suggestions on possible    future careers and part-time work.  Also, the website describes particular jobs, salary, educational requirements and the     number  of available of jobs in this field.

  • Teen Summer Job Safety website found at www.osha.gov/SLTC/teenworkers  provides safety and health information for young workers and provides information about a worker rights and responsibilities. Links to training and other educational tools are also available.  Other websites of interest to consider are  www.teenjobscene.com   and www.teenjobsection.com.

Furthermore, any work experience paid or unpaid is an opportunity to learn, an opportunity to acquire a skill and a chance to gain excellent references.
