Can volunteering help
me land a job?

Job coaches and career counselors encourage job seekers to volunteer while looking for work. Some may feel that volunteering may interfere with precious time that could be spent looking for paid employment. However, volunteering has many advantages and could put you in line to gain employment. Consider the following:

Exposure: Volunteering allows you to stay connected with the business community. You may get an opportunity to work with hiring managers, board members and others who could recommend or offer a reference to a perspective employer or business owner. Non-profits should be considered especially during these times when giving may be less and the need to serve others is great. Your local United Way Agency, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Hands on South Alabama and others are in need of volunteers

Credentials: There is nothing more effective than to show someone what you can do rather than tell them. Volunteering allows you to validate your skills and abilities, as well as, learn a new skill set. Dislocated workers, recent college graduates, stay-at-home mothers looking to re-enter the workforce should look for opportunities to gain work experience by participating in volunteer activities. In fact, volunteers are needed for United Way of Southwest Alabama's Annual Day of Caring scheduled for Friday, April 26. Volunteers have the opportunity to connect with over 53 partner agencies. To learn more, please visit www.uwswa.org .

Passion: Turn your hobby into a job. For example if you like to build things or have a passion for cooking, use those talents to help others. Consider donating hours to help build homes for agencies such as Habitat for Humanity. If cooking is your passion, consider volunteering as a cook for a local non-profit agency who may serve the elderly, homeless, vetereans and other groups. It's a win-win situation!

Also, perspective employers may be inclined to consider volunteer work when searching for candidates to fill a position and may favor a candidate who has volunteer work experience. Volunteering demonstrates community awareness to social issues and shows that you are not selfish.
