Your smartphone- the key to your job search

Years ago, mobile phones were considered a luxury and their  only feature allowed consumers to make a phone call. Now the mobile phone explosion has taken on a totally new existence due to technological advances. Consumers not only have a phone that will allow them to make phone calls, but a mobile phone with many more capabilities. These phones, "smartphones"  have features of most computers. They allow you to search the internet, text, receive and send e-mails, take pictures, use GPS tracking devices, download music, take videos, check your bank balance, watch tv, etc.  Also, software applications are available which allow you to send documents for printing from your phone, work on spreadsheets, powerpoint presentations, compose letters make shopping lists and the list is endless.

In fact, job seekers should consider using a smartphone as an additional tool to help with your job search. Listed below are a few cost saving advantages to owning a smartphone. Your next job maybe at your fingertips if you apply the S.A.V.E  method:

Save on purchasing a computer- Job seekers who are not in a position to purchase a computer to help with their  job search should consider opting for a smartphone instead.  A smartphone has the capabilities of a computer. Of course, using a smartphone doesn't compare physically to a desktop or laptop computer, but it will suffice until you are able to use a desktop or laptop . If you don't have access to a computer  via family and friends, consider using the computers available at your local career center . The Career Center allows job seekers to use computers with Microsoft Office software and  internet access for a self-directed job search. Job seekers can access the Alabama JobLink website found at www.joblink.alabama.gov. The local Career Center is located at 515 Springhill Plaza Court in Mobile.

Avoid costly phone bills. If you have a traditional landline phone and a cell phone and you are attempting to cut costs in your household budget, consider using  just a cell phone to save money.

Venture into the world of software applications.  Smartphones have many applications available that will allow you to perform functions just as you would on a traditional computer.  You can search the internet for jobs, apply for jobs  on the internet, send your resume to prospective employers and respond  via e-mail. Additionally you can get job leads by using social media applications.  Consider www.TweetMyJOBS.com. This  website allows you to customize your job search based on your specific interests, qualifications and preferred location of jobs. You specify  your profile by using  Job Channels. Additionally, you can receive the following:

  • Receive INSTANT notification of new jobs in your Twitter feed or on your mobile device
  • Learn of new posting from thousands of leading companies
  • Post (and tweet) your resume and custom profile to thousands of recruiters and hiring managers.
  • Forward jobs to friends.
  • Receive daily job updates via email or RSS.
  • Be able to search for jobs using TweetMap, a Google Maps enabled job tool.

Eliminate additional cell phones fees from internet usage by connectiong to wireless internet service whenever possible. This will help save on data useage. Most public facilities have free wi-fi service.
