Volunteer Spotlight: Nancy Solomon and Norm MacDonald

"The Cancer Support Community is valuable to people dealing with cancer, and I've been there. Whatever we can do to make it easier for people going through it right now, that's what we want to do."

~Nancy Solomon

It was May 31, 2013. The day before the annual Cancer Survivors Picnic at the Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara. In less than 24 hours, hundreds of people would be coming for an afternoon of barbecue, music, and dancing.

There was just one problem - and it was a problem that threatened to ruin the entire event. The one toilet in the men's restroom was broken, and if the staff couldn't fix it, they would have to cancel the picnic.

The folks at CscVvsb knew exactly who to call: Norm and Nancy. If superheroes were real, Norm and Nancy would be CscVvsb's own caped crusaders. They work together to help CscVvsb with all kinds of tasks, from replacing light bulbs to transporting items to storage...and, as it turns out, fixing toilets.

A Practical Guide to Gratitude

We love this time of year, when thoughts turn to giving thanks and celebrating the company of family and friends.

Research shows that gratitude has many important benefits including immunity boosting and heart health - so why not turn giving thanks into a 365-day event?

A Message from Board Chair Lisa Allison

Dear CscVvsb Community Member,

As we look toward year end; shorter days, holidays and cooler weather, we pause to remember what a wonderful year this has been for CscVvsb. Thanks to our generous donors, tireless volunteers and staff, CscVvsb is on track to provide education, emotional support and hope to more than 3,000 people this year.

During the year, we have also had fun at our successful fundraising events including our annual Celebration of Hope Gala, Cupcakes for Cancer, and Revlon Run Walk. I invite and encourage you to participate in our next major event, the 23rd annual Holiday Homes Tour on December 6th and 7th. Experience the joy of the holiday season while touring some of the most beautiful homes in our community and supporting CscVvsb.

Each year, we must raise at least $1 million dollars to sustain and expand our programs that help those fighting cancer and their families. All of our services and programs are FREE of charge to our participants thanks to the many corporations, foundations and individuals who generously support our mission to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.

Each of us likely knows and cares for one or more people who are or have been affected by cancer. We have witnessed the fear, isolation and grief that accompany a cancer diagnosis. We have also witnessed the profound impact of HOPE, a core belief of CscVvsb.

If you have not already done so, I encourage you to explore our website at www.cancersupportVVSB.org. It provides a wealth of information that centers on our local community and how you can become a champion that assists in enriching the lives of so many of our family, friends and neighbors.

My HOPE is that you will give as generously as possible in the remaining months of 2014 and beyond. Each of the board members, including myself, has made a personal commitment to CscVvsb financially as well as with our time. We are so excited about the difference this organization makes and we invite you to once again join us in making a difference in the lives of those impacted by cancer. We appreciate your support.

Wishing you good health and HOPE,
