As part of our National Cancer Survivor's Day Picnic, The Wings of Hope Butterfly Release will take place at 2pm on Saturday, May 31st in CscVvsb's Garden of Hope. The release will honor friends and loved ones who have been touched by cancer...those who are still with us, and those who have passed.

With your sponsorship, a live butterfly will be released in your name, or the name of your loved one. Your donation will help support our annual services to over 3,000 local children, teens and adults on their cancer journey.

Steve Bartolucci, a 14-year Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor and 2010 Breakaway from Cancer Champion, had this to say about his experience at the 2013 Butterfly Release:

Steve shows the butterflies to some curious kids before the release

The Butterfly Release was a magical moment for both young, and those young at heart! I don't think many of us get a chance to see a swarm of these delicate creatures, especially in a "mesh-sided hat box," but the Release had everyone mesmerized as they flew, lighted on the courtyard trees and shrubs, and most significantly, chose a few of us to land on in a "touching" way.

Want to be part of the magic? Click here to sponsor your own butterfly, and call 805.379.4777 to RSVP for the picnic.

Participant Profile: Michele Blum

In honor of National Brain Tumor Awareness Month, we would like to introduce Michele Blum, a seven-year glioblastoma survivor and a participant in the Brain Tumor Networking Group and other programs provided by CscVvsb. Thank you for sharing your story, Michele!

Seven years ago, Michele Blum was expecting her first child, excited about becoming a parent, and looking forward to continuing her teaching career after her maternity leave. Everything changed when Michele was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (an aggressive and highly malignant type of brain tumor). Instead of enjoying her last few months of pregnancy, Michele had to undergo emergency brain surgery followed by grueling radiation treatments. The baby was delivered more than a month early so Michele could begin chemotherapy. "Since then, it has felt like a glass has shattered into a thousand pieces and we are still trying to put all those pieces back together," says Michele.

Volunteer Spotlight: Art Connolly

Art Connolly is a three-time cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997, thyroid cancer in 2006, and adenocarcinoma in 2008. He had to undergo surgery for all three occurrences and went through six months of  chemotherapy for the adenocarcinoma. During a visit to his oncologist, he noticed a brochure for the Cancer Support Community (then called The Wellness Community) in the waiting room. Art and his wife Paula both attended regular support groups through the end of 2010.

Revlon Run/Walk: Portrait of a Team

Peggy (3rd from right) and some of the friends
who will join her at the Revlon Run/Walk
When Peggy Johnston, LMFT heard about the upcoming Revlon Run/Walk on May 10, she decided to take part.

A support group facilitator at CscVvsb for 14 years, Peggy had plenty of motivation to join the fight against women's cancers, and had donated to the Revlon Run/Walk in the past. But this year she wanted to walk, and she decided to enlist her friends to join her. Peggy hopes to get 25 people to join her team in support of CscVvsb.

"Many of us are now in the stage of our lives that we have 'walked along side' family and friends that have faced cancer," says Peggy. "The Revlon Run/Walk is a wonderful way to contribute to CscVvsb so that we may continue to help countless people walk the path of cancer with dignity, hope, and support."

Join Peggy in the fight to against women's cancers on May 10! Click here for details.

Leaving a Legacy: Spotlight on Retirement

What will you do with your unspent retirement savings?

While most people would like to care for family members after they are gone, the problem with giving your unspent retirement savings to your family (other than your surviving spouse) is that the majority of your savings will be taxed. First, the asset will be included in your estate and may be subject to estate tax.

Family members will pay tax at their ordinary income rate resulting in very little of your remaining money actually going to your family.

The better solution is to give your family the assets that step-up in basis at death such as stock and real estate. Unlike your retirement assets, these assets may be received and sold by your family without paying any tax. If you are looking for ways to save on estate tax, your retirement assets actually make a better gift to charity. This is because a charitable organization like ours can receive the entire asset tax-free and make use of it to further our mission.

Kenneth Kossoff, an estate planning attorney and longtime CscVvsb board member, agrees:

"I explain to clients that if they want to name a charity, it's a good idea to name the charity on a retirement account, so the charity gets 100% of the money, and to name family members or other non-charities on the assets which will not be subject to income tax when distributed after death. Gifts to charities are a wonderful way to leave a legacy - even if you want to do so anonymously. It is a lasting and powerful to say thank you to a charity which has helped us, or which we know helps other people."
