Breakaway from Cancer

Amgen invites those touched by cancer - patients, survivors, caregivers and advocates - to participate in the 2013 Breakaway Mile, an approximately half- to one-mile walk that honors and celebrates cancer survivors as part of Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer®, a national initiative founded in 2005 to increase awareness of important resources available to people affected by cancer - from prevention through survivorship.

The Breakaway Mile takes place on the Amgen Tour of California race course, May 12-19, prior to the day's professional race in four 2013 host cities - Escondido, Santa Clarita, Santa Barbara, and Livermore.

How NOT to Say the Wrong Thing

Did you ever wish you knew the right thing to say to a friend dealing with illness or trauma? Ever wish you could give your own friends some guidance on what to avoid saying to you in difficult times?

We loved this LA Times article because it offers an easy tool for figuring out what is okay and not okay to say. It's called the Ring Theory (illustrated above). Click here to read the article.

At CSCVVSB we also offer a handy list of tips called "How to Be a Good Friend to a Person with Cancer." It's available at our facility or you can click here to view it online.

We hope these tools help you - whether you are a survivor, family member, or friend.

Leaving a Legacy through Planned Giving: Beth Hill-Kin, RN, MS, OCN

Beth Hill-Kin, RN, MS, OCN, is co-founder of the Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara and a longtime board member. She is the Director of Nursing at Buena Vista Hospice Care, Inc.

As a Legacy Donor, Beth has chosen to help CSCVVSB provide hope and support to future generations of people affected by cancer.

"I am leaving a legacy of support through a planned gift because I am the co-founder of this organization and I want to support cancer patients even after I have passed away," says Beth. "My whole career has been dedicated to serving cancer patients so leaving this legacy is so important to me."

When we volunteer, we can:
  • Solve problems
  • Strengthen communities
  • Improve lives
  • Connect to others
  • Transform our own lives

Check out this list of upcoming volunteer opportunities at CSCVVSB. If you have trouble accessing the list, or would like to meet with someone to discuss other opportunities, please call us at 805.379.4777. We appreciate your consideration
