Good Girl Art presents The Store Window Series: Sacred and Secular & WALLPAPER: Layers of Time
Good Girl Art Gallery, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101,
presents two shows in December: The Store Window Series: Sacred and Secular by Randy Russell and WALLPAPER: Layers of Time by Barbara Williams. Of The Store Window Series: Sacred and Secular, Randy Russell says, "I remain interested in assemblage compositions, with those compositions now evolving more frequently into sculptural works. This series comes from memories growing up in St. Louis and the wonder that the large store windows in the Downtown area held for me during the Holiday Season. Collected objects in the assemblage compositions evoke those memories, the time they represent and  personal history. Not realizing as a child the secularization of the Christmas Season primarily because the images we are exposed to are not designed to make that connection, the representations became more sentimental and commercialized as I grew older, distancing the images even further from the Season they represent. The sculptural angel figures in this series reflect the co-opting of the Holiday and its religious context even more directly, with mixed messages in both the objects and combinations of materials used. As with previous works, some of the works are further informed by fragments of text, which appear in small, almost hidden sections, but remain an integral part in the compositional whole of the piece. All of the pieces are primarily commercialized representations of an idea, an idea over time which has evolved with an entirely different meaning than its origin." Of WALLPAPER: Layers of Time, Barbara Williams says, "I peeled layers of wallpaper from old Ozarks houses which revealed multiple layers of time, layers of wallpaper styles from the 1930s and later. Some of these old houses used only burlap, newspaper and wallpaper over their frame construction, while some, as during my childhood, used only newspaper for wallpaper. I was inspired to make timepieces from these examples of layered wallpaper, burlap and newspaper within a family home setting. Family members in these pieces are etchings that are part of a larger and longstanding series of my family, Ozarks, 1940s-50s era." She adds, "Further from home: I was Inspired and touched by the wallpaper and images pasted thereon by Anne Frank at the Anne Frank House, Amsterdam. As part of this series on wallpaper I wanted to pay homage to Anne by recreating my version of that wallpaper. Millions have been touched not only by her diary, but also by the intimate space she created by pasting magazine photos of British and American movie stars and other images of interest. During a time of such heartache and stress, she had decorated her wall much like any teenage girl did at the time."
