Arts & Letters: Ellen Neville, The Violet Lockets

Arts & Letters, 214 S. Campbell, invites you to enjoy the opening reception for Ellen Neville: Recent Work during the Nov. 1 First Friday Art Walk. We are delighted to be showcasing this talented, young artist! Also, enjoy The Violet Lockets, performing live during the reception. "These works are an exploration of pattern and design in weaving and embroidery. I used the traditional Japanese embroidery technique Sashiko as my medium for drawing and stitching the patterns because it is noted for its polished simplicity and thoughtful design. Weaving is an incredibly complicated and time consuming art that requires much planning, sketching, drafting, and math. Simplifying the design of these weavings and expressing them with this technique allowed me to see the composition in its most sincere form. The patterns in these weavings are made from mixing the order of pedaling on the loom, which is what I am referencing in the use of handkerchiefs as my canvas." - Ellen Neville. Ellen is a Springfield native and 2013 Drury University graduate who has also studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Fresh Gallery: Featured Artist Dianne Baum
Fresh Gallery, 400 W. Walnut, presents Featured Artist Dianne Baum. An artist of unique ability, Dianne's creations are colorful and whimsical. Her works range from watercolor paintings to found objects creatively assembled, and in most cases, she adds words and quotes that are meaningful to her. After leaving her "paid" job, she began fulfilling her childhood dream of being a full-time artist and has yet to put down her paintbrushes. "For as long as I can remember, I've created," she says. "Even as a child I didn't play with paper dolls, I created them. After repeatedly being told art was not a job, I chose teaching English and later became a high school librarian. However, my longing for creativity was reflected in everything I did - bulletin boards, dance decorations, theme workshops and even unofficial photographer for the local newspaper. Outside my job, I created greeting cards, weddings, parties, tablescapes, costumes and clothes." Baum's work has been exhibited at Waverly House in Springfield, Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin and Longwell Museum in Neosho, just to name a few. In addition to exhibiting, she has been awarded the Mixed Media Merit Award for the Thomas Hart Benton Exhibit and Competition in Neosho, as well as Best of Shows and 1st Place awards in local photography competitions. Meet Dianne and experience her work in person during the Nov. 1 Art Walk. www.freshgallery.org (417) 862-9300 Open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. T-Sat, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. during Art Walk

IdeaXFactory welcomes #EverybodyAllTheTime, plus Weaving Space and The Harmonic Wall
 | #EverybodyAllTheTime |
IdeaXFactory, 351 N. Boonville, welcomes Missouri State University BFA dance major Sarah Greenbaum as she presents her performance installation #EverybodyAllTheTime during the Nov. 1 Art Walk. Collaborating with Alec Brown, Jaime Daniels, Carmen Hartmann, Gavin Juckette, Drew Mittman, Kahrya Vaughn and Dara Vint, #EverybodyAllTheTime "explores the experience of living simultaneously online and in the real world," Sarah says. "We live in a hyper-digital age that requires us to create various online profiles through which we present information about ourselves to masses of people in order to keep up academically, socially, and professionally. We edit and polish the information we share. We interact with others online as mediated versions of ourselves. In this work, I juxtapose the performers' flesh-and-bone, real-life selves with the polished personas they create for themselves on the Internet. The work has two goals: first, to acknowledge that the way people portray themselves on the Internet is integral to the person they are in real life (and to how other people see them). Second, the work strives to assert the importance of real-life connections between individuals as opposed to online social networking, since there are benefits to forming meaningful, real-life kinship which cannot be replicated through or replaced by Internet interaction. Walk around. Explore. Take pictures. Talk to each other. Stand close to a performer, or watch several from further away. Enjoy, question, reflect." Between performances, Art of Space's Weaving Space workshop experiments will be on exhibit. These studio constructions use thin wood slats to create nest-like enclosures and are a sneak preview of their larger installation, upcoming in December. The interactive neon installation Harmonic Wall by Russ RuBert will also be on exhibit between performances.http://ideaxfactory.com

Obelisk Home presents The Art of Paula Jones

Obelisk Home at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents The Art of Paula Jones in November. "The study I did with an incredibly intuitive, talented artist was when I finally figured out WHY I painted. First question she asked me was, 'Why? Why do you paint?' I was stumped, and then started making up bogus answers that sounded good. Or so I thought. She saw right through the fog and indecision. 'Paula, why do you paint?' It was then I settled into listening to my internal voice about the actual why. 'I paint, because I never allowed myself the time to PLAY!' It was a total surprise to me. Was that true? Had I never allowed myself to actually PLAY? ... And so began the unfolding of me, my internal knowing, that I am here to play - to teach others to play and to LOVE what they are doing. My paintings unfold and develop intuitively. I converse with the canvas, sometimes starting with an intention, or sometimes just allowing and knowing that this process works best for me. I paint a layer, and then glaze - layer after layer - allowing the layers to build upon themselves creating the depth and richness in the paintings that I love. I find that even the 'mistakes' frequently become an intrinsic part of the painting, and I instinctively know that this is much as our lives are. Our 'mistakes' or learning experiences as I prefer to call them, are layered with time and other experiences, creating the fine masterpieces that we are today. Play - so important - and yet we forget about it as we get older. That is one of the main reasons for this show ... to teach and show what play can look like on canvas. We tend to think that we need to just "work at a job", and not enjoy our lives... One thing that I have realized that I bring to the table is my courage to step into who I am and bring hope into the world, by utilizing the gift that I have been given ..." - Paula Jones (417) 616-6488 www.obeliskhome.com

OTC Fine Art: Elizabeth Moreland's Notes & Songs

OTC Fine Art Gallery at The Gillioz, 325 Park Central East, Third Floor, presents Elizabeth Moreland's Notes and Songs: One Artist's Portrait of the Music World. Join OTC Fine Art Gallery Nov. 1 for the opening reception. Elizabeth will have approximately20canvases of all sizes from the very small to the very large. Painted in oil, they tell the story of music as seen through the eyes of an artist. They are as varied as the musicians she knows. They cover the realms of the imaginative, to the natural, to the romantic. Elizabeth, who is from St. Louis, has been painting for over 20 years. Her work is deeply influenced by her early childhood exposure to nature. Spending time in the woods and fields near her rural home and in the sunshine, often barefoot, helped her forge a deep connection to the natural world. For a time, she majored in math at WashingtonUniversity in St. Louis, but in 2011 she made a decision of the heart, and decided to commit herself to creating art full-time. Since then, she has obsessively pursued her dream of making visions come alive on canvas. Elizabeth met singer-songwriter Kevin Renick in October 2010. Some months afterward, they fell in love and decided to make a life together, dramatically changing Elizabeth's direction and aesthetic. For an entire year, they "lived on the road" traveling from city to city, performing from one stage to the next. Kevin had his guitar, Elizabeth her paintbrush. Elizabeth was thrown into the communal world of musicians, with their gigs, their instruments, and their passionate, diverse songs and styles. This exhibition will feature paintings of some of her musician friends, as well as a few more famous figures from the world of music at large. The influence of the natural world on the artist can be seen in several of her larger pieces. (417) 447-8873 Open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. M-Th; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. F; and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on First Fridays
