Fresh: Meike Aton & Karla Breeding Trammell
Art by Meike Aton
Art by Meike Aton
Fresh Gallery, 400 W. Walnut, proud to announce its Featured Artists for June: Meike Aton and Karla Breeding Trammell. Meike Aton's canvases are filled with brilliant color and bold brush strokes. She is best known for her vibrantly colorful representations of landscapes, seascapes, flowers and trees. Aton is currently working on a new series of abstracts called, "St. Francis Cliffs." This series is inspired by the massive adobe-style building of the St. Francis Church in Taos, NM. A portion of this series will be on display during the month of June at Fresh Gallery. It is a body of work you won't want to miss. Karla Breeding Trammell, an award-winning artist most recently recognized by Watercolor USA, is known for both her two-dimensional works in paint, pen and pencil, and her three-dimensional creations of original jewelry, an exquisite collection of which is on display at Fresh. Trammell's jewelry designs range from simple and elegant to masterfully intricate and chic. "We live in a culture where most of us are just too busy to pay attention to the simple beauty of nature that surrounds us," she says. "I believe that an artist should use her God-given talent to preserve as much of that beauty as possible; capturing a mood, a fleeting moment or a sense of space. Although we can document nature through the lens of a camera, my recording is done with a pencil, a brush or a pen. It is my hope that through my art I can share some of the surroundings near and dear to my heart with those who have had no opportunity to experience them, and perhaps inspire others to do likewise. If not for art, mankind would surely cease to exist, making the world a dismal place indeed. It is up to both the artist and the beholder to preserve, protect and perpetuate." www.freshgallery.org  (417) 862-9300 Open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. T-Sat, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. during Art Walk

Good Girl Art Gallery: If It's Inevitable, Just Relax & Enjoy It, plus Lil's and Tommi's Portrait Parlor
Good Girl Art Gallery logo
Good Girl Art Gallery, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101,presents Artist Ellen Neville's show If It's Inevitable, Just Relax and Enjoy It, a series of embroideries that explores traditional women's crafts and the positions women play in politics, plus a Portrait Parlor installation by Lil Olive and Tommi Clark Of her art, Neville says, "These are portraits of United States policymakers all of whom have made unsettling comments about women's reproductive health issues. It is important to put a face to the quotes we have all heard in the past few years, and I chose embroidery on vintage linens as my medium because of the strong history of women's folk art and what is conventionally considered women's work. In my weavings, I used color theory, texture, scale, and material to create these patterns. Weaving has a long history in women's work and tradition, and I try to use it as a modern form of mark-making while honoring and maintaining the women's craft connotations." Neville studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Kansas City Art Institute, and is receiving a Bachelors of the Arts degree from Drury University. Most of her inspiration comes from current events and politics, but some artists she is inspired by are Orly Cogan, Tilleke Schwarz, Ghada Amer, Aubrey Beardsley, and Erika Somogyi. She also spends a lot of time looking at vintage embroidery patterns and samplers. Her plan for the future is to continue getting inspiration from the aesthetic of past decades and to develop her embroidery and weaving skills. She looks forward to taking a much-needed break after her six-year undergraduate career and spending time applying to graduate schools to further study Fiber Arts. Revel Advertising: Featured Artist Kat AllieSolace by Kat Allie
Revel Advertising at the Inspired Commerce  Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Featured Artist Kat Allie in June. "I want people to view my artwork as very sensory and engaging. Working with hot beeswax, damar resin and oil pigment allows me immediate access to the natural or organic state of creating. The encaustic medium transforms from a liquid to a solid within seconds. Acting and reacting becomes intuitive and transcendental. I'm inherently drawn to nature for my subject. Nature transforms and abstracts as I sense and experience it through the human condition. My ultimate hope is for the viewer to connect, if even for a split second, with the splendid colors and textures that compose life." - Kat Allie (417) 368-6966 www.reveladvertising.com
