Wolf Creek Lodge Cohousing Newsletter

Proactive Adult Cohousing in Grass Valley, California

June 2013

In This Issue
Greetings!

This month's newsletter has information for all:

For those still discovering cohousing:

we give details about an exceptional senior cohousing forum in Berkeley,

For those considering a life in Wolf Creek Lodge:

rules are made for breaking! Our rule is to emphasize the life style in Wolf Creek Lodge and say little about the real estate. We do this because a move to our community should be driven by an appreciation of the unique culture of a senior cohousing community and not by the color of the carpets. However, for once, we break the rule and say a lot about the homes.

For all:

once again Magdalene captures the essence of the month in the lodge in her column "Living in the Lodge".

Berkeley Senior Cohousing Forum
June 29th
We join with Phoenix Commons to present this forum.

This forum is a great opportunity for those interested in the cohousing lifestyle. It's a rare opportunity to hear from the experts.  You will also be able to review two different senior cohousing communities.  Phoenix Commons, on the Oakland waterfront, is planned but construction has not yet started.  Wolf Creek Lodge has homes available now.

We will hear presentations from Kathryn McCamant & Charles Durrett who introduced cohousing to North America 30  years ago, and have designed & developed over 50 cohousing communities in the US and Canada.

Victoria Stone will introduce Phoenix Commons. Victoria is Community Development Director for  this new planned cohousing community.

Members of Wolf Creek Lodge will be on a panel to answer your  questions about cohousing living.

Available Homes at Wolf Creek Lodge
Six available homes

There has been an increase in inquiries about Wolf Creek Lodge.  We think this is driven by several factors.  First, the improving housing market gives people confidence they can sell their existing home.  Secondly the low rates in the current mortgage market and the availability of standard financing on homes in the lodge.  Finally, now that many of us are living in the lodge, people can pay us a visit and experience the lifestyle first hand.

So, for those of you who understand senior cohousing and embrace it's philosophy, we show a sampler of the available homes.

The floor plans at Wolf Creek Lodge can be divided into 4 types:

A - homes that do not belong to the other types

B - one bedroom homes

C - two bedroom, one bath homes

D - homes at the ends with two bedrooms, two baths.

We have all types available.

Home 103
A 2BD-1BA home on the first level. (Type C).
103 Exterior view
This home is on the ground floor close to the patio. It has an inviting shaded space in front for chairs to relax with your neighbors.
103 from entrance
This home, although available, has been "staged" with furniture to show how it might look when lived in. Here is a view from the front entrance.

Home 106
A 2BD - 1BA home on the first floor level. (Type C).
This home is also on the ground floor. It has convenient access to the patio and the other common areas. The perennial jig saw puzzle in the common house living room is conveniently at your disposal.
Below is a view of an occupied home with a similar floor plan.
Home 108
A 2BD-2BA home on the first level. (Type D).
108 Front Door
This home is on the ground floor. It is the largest of the available homes.  It has a "gathering node" on the doorstep and a deck accessible from the living room and the master bedroom.
108 from entrance
This is a view from the front entrance. Below you can see the same view in an occupied home with the same floor plan.

Home 304
A  1BD-1BA home on the third level. (Type B).
304 inclusive view
This is a view showing the skylight in the vaulted ceiling, plenty of storage space and the single bedroom down the corridor with sliding doors for summer breeze.

Home 307
A   larger unique 1BD-1BA home on the third level. (Type A)
307 vaulted ceiling
307 is an exceptional home. We all expect it to go quickly.  It was reserved for a long time by a prospective owner who then had a change of plans. This is a view of the sky light in the vaulted ceiling.  It has many other unique features - come and see for yourself.

Home 308
A 1BD-1BA home on the third level. (Type B)
308 Kitchen
Here is a view of the kitchen with the door open to the balcony in the background.  Again another fine view from the third floor. The elevator is available for those days when the stairs seem too demanding.

Landscaping

landscaping
The landscape team insisted that we show you some of their work. If they can achieve this in 6 months we can expect trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers in profusion in the  near future.

Living in the Lodge
by Magdalene Jaeckel
Magdalene JaeckelThe most noticeable thing in the last month has been the blossoming of our gardens. We now have a sizeable vegetable patch where we are harvesting radishes, lettuce, spinach and several other greens. An herb garden has been planted as well, which adds to the flavor and health of our common meals. The trees, however still small, look healthy and promise to give shade to our patio before too long. Many perennial flowers and shrubs have been planted all around the Lodge.
Several of us are making a habit of getting down to Wolf Creek via the 200 or so steps that Kirk has built. We meditate or just enjoy the rushing creek and the sound of the water and the bird calls. It's like being in another world. Climbing back up the stairs is good aerobic exercise.
Soon we are going to have a massive garage sale, open to the public. Many of us have furniture, art work and useful items of all sorts that are left after downsizing from a large home into Wolf Creek Lodge. We hope to use the money from this sale for new projects to benefit our life here.
