WELCOME!

As I stroll around Wolf Creek Lodge I see very different treatments of front doors and gathering nodes. There are flowers, statues, trees, vegetables, playing cards, herbs, chairs, tables and sometimes a minimalist approach. See our front door picture gallery below with remarks by the owners. Are these things a reflection of the owner's personality? I leave you to judge.
Make sure to scroll right down to our regular Magdalene's "Living in the Lodge" column and Roger's "Letter from Virginia".
 | | I love being able to grow herbs for cooking right outside my door! |
 | | My pansy patch. |
 | | I like having peace and compassion reminders outside my door! Nancy Hill |
 | | I can never have too many flowers. I have them on my balcony and in a box on the railing. I may end up encroaching on my neighbors but please don't let them know. Some plants that don't work out here I put in the lodge's landscaping. I do a little landscaping work each day: planting, weeding and watering. The landscaping team is very active. As the plants majure we will have vegetables to eat, fruit from our trees and a cornucopia of flowers and ornamental trees. |
 | | A popular spot, on the third level, to gather for appetizers before dinner in the common house. |
 | | I sit here watching the beautiful sunsets above the tall pines..... |
 | | and here it is. |
 | | More to come - too busy having fun now that I'm 70. |
 | | Kwan Yin and my greyhound Shambo are best friends! |
 | | I love sitting out on my little patio and decorating it with potted flowers. I also love being on the first floor so close to the Common House - only a few steps away - and close to all the action: gatherings for appetizers and beverages before common meals, croquet on the lawn and Petanque on our court close by. |
 | | My premium box seat on the ground floor offers the best view of the petanque games. Come join me but bring your own champagne. |
 | | There is a movement to eat locally. Claire does this to extreme. She can pluck a second helping without getting up from the table in the gathering node outside her home. |
 | | From a distance the landscaping around our patio appears a little sparse. Closer inspection reveals many young plants establishing themselves. Each day we seem to have more as the landscaping team continues their planting campaign. An apple tree arrived this past week. The irrigation system is being extended. Towards the upper right you can see one of our vegetable patches. Our common room salads now include greens from the other vegetable patches. |
 | | Our bridge player negelected his gathering node but our latest resident seized the available real estate for her champion roses. See below: |
 | | Just let those deer try jumping up to the third floor to get our roses! |
 | | We did say bridge - guess there are no jokers in bridge. |
 | | The third floor offers some great views. A member on the McKnight wing enjoys this vew of the trees from her kitchen window. |
 | | Sadly 307 is still looking for an owner who will look after her. |

Roger's Letter From Virginia
| |

There has been lots of traffic here on the farm. Almost all it has been at the bird feeders. And once again lots of old friends have returned for the spring and summer. The early
visitors, the Titmice, Chick-a-dees, Nutcatches, Juncos and others have moved north. However, Cardinals, Goldfinches, Blue Jays, Phoebes, Carolina Wrens, Towhees, Eastern Bluebirds, Tree swallows, and many others have settled in and are busy building summer cottages around the property.
Lots of things are happening in the gardens. Shall I call you when the snow peas, new potatoes, raspberries and sweet corn are ready for harvest? Sorry but no sweet potatoes or okra this year.
You'll come visit soon.

Magdalene on Living in Wolf Creek Lodge
| |

Another month has gone by, living at Wolf Creek Lodge. It became obvious how many diverse talents we have here that make life fun and creative. We have some very enthusiastic and competent gardeners, and our landscaping as well as the vegetable garden look promising and have already yielded radishes, salad greens and herbs too.
There is a whole crew of "Whakkos" who are combating the Scotch Broom on our hillside. My hat off to them! That's hard work. Kirk, our master "rock artist", is building 150+ steps down to the creek. Whoever cannot get down (and mainly up) all the stairs can at least listen to the slow rumble of the Creek below. But I, in spite of my age, am determined to get down there in the summer to enjoy the shade and cool breeze. I am practicing every day going up and down the steps, 20 at a time and doing as much walking as I can.
It's much easier now that I don't drive my car anymore. I have to think back on my childhood in Germany, when we walked or bicycled to school, to sports events, to dance classes and to the market. I cannot walk that much anymore, but there are willing friends to give me a ride, and it is actually fun to do errands together, I find. Sometimes you inspire each other to spend more money, sometimes you learn to be a bit more careful. We always learn from each other. Other people create great common meals, again others are good diplomats and help to resolve occasional disagreements.
