| MAKING A DIFFERENCE |
JOHN MIRANDA was named Volunteer of the Month for JANUARY 2013
It occurred to us that 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of Dr. David Walker's establishing his ministry in Los Angeles. His work began in the Recreation Room in Denny Park in Beverly Hills, and from the very first day, John Miranda has been volunteering. For twenty -five years, John has been a welcoming presence at all our various locations. He has been in class consistently and is one person who takes treatment seriously and demonstrates. ( Don't let this serious photo scare you--he's also just about the kindest man you'll every meet in your life.) John, we thank you for your amazing record of continuing dedication, and know that you'll be with us ...forever...or longer. Thank you, John. You make a difference! |

| BOOKS WE LOVE |
Brene Brown became famous because of two talks she gave at TED Conferences. Her latest book is called Daring Greatly.
As the world did NOT end at the conclusion of the Mayan Calendar in December, why not enter the new year with a high and noble aspiration? This book is both inspiring and instructional and is sure to serve you well.

| OUR PURPOSE |
This Center exists to support all people with the transformation of their lives. We do this by teaching Spiritual Principle and by celebrating the Promise of Living.
Our philosophy, outlook and practice is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Ernest Holmes. Our basic textbook is "The Science of Mind" by Dr. Holmes.
Our founding pastor was Dr. David J. Walker. We honor his legacy by adhering to the essence of the Science of Mind teachings and by knowing "that the innermost God and the highest God are one and the same."
The purpose of life is to strike a balance between acknow- ledging our completeness and enjoying our creativity.
Dr. David J. Walker

What Inspires Me
Early on Sunday morning as I prepare for the day ahead, I listen to a radio show on KPFK called "Gospel Classics" hosted by the remarkable Edna Tatum. This has been a part of my Sunday mornings for decades. And while I do not "belong" to the specific tradition whence this great music treasury arises from, I do belong to the family of mankind. Praising the day and giving thanks is an important and universal spiritual practice and my own version of that practice is supported by this particular show and its music. Last week one unfamiliar song really got my attention. It was sung and written by the late Rev. O.C. Smith and titled "Isn't Life Beautiful?" It was simple, rich and sincere. I have not been able to find a copy of this song anywhere but I remember what that song was praising - "...church bells on Sunday...school bells on Monday...talk with friends...pray folks make amends..." All reminding us, Isn't life beautiful? Yes, life is beautiful. Every day, in so many ways, I am inspired to not only remember this but to also see beauty in ways I might have previously overlooked. It is easy to see beauty in the glamorous city around us and in the extravagant natural wonders so abundant in California. If we take the time, we will also find it easy to see it in the bagger at the market who asks if we need help with our groceries, in the simple smiles we exchange with strangers on elevators, in profound welcome we experience from our beds when we climb into them after a productive day. Isn't life beautiful when you can look in the mirror and honestly give yourself a nod of appreciation? Isn't life beautiful when you arrive at the Center on Sundays and see that someone--someone was expecting you and got everything set up for you to have a joyful experience? Isn't life wonderful when you begin to really know that Life is for you and nothing is against you? Isn't life wonderful? Yes. Yes it is.

Spiritual Mind Treatment
There is only One thing going on and it is the eternal unfolding of Life, of that which we call God. It is the Self-givingness of Spirit, working through Law, that expresses Itself in, through, and as Its creation. I am part of this creation and therefore partake in Its nature - Perfect Being that works in Divine right order, harmony, and intelligence. I allow this treatment to realign my thinking with the Truth. I am Divine Spirit in human form. I have been created in order to wake up to my true identity and consciously participate in the eternal unfolding of Life. Personal self-worth doesn't get any better than this, and I eliminate all thinking contrary to it. Remembering my spiritual identity puts my daily activities in proper perspective. It is who I am being and what I am creating while doing what I do that matters. This consciousness allows me to release all tension, fear, and anxiety surrounding these endeavors. I relax into the knowing that there is a Divine Intelligence within me that I am, that is always working in perfect right order. I know that there is a Divine Principle that I can depend on and a Divine Presence which abides. I go forward with a full sense of security, of freedom, and ease. I am grateful for who I am and the abundant Life I get to express. I release this word to Law, knowing it is so. Elizabeth Dadd

From The Perennial Philosophy
Once that divine love is obtained,
one looks only to that,
one speaks only of that,
and one contemplates only that.
It is easily recognized;
love requires no proof
outside of itself; it is its own proof.
It appears in the form of inward peace
and supreme happiness.
One who has attained it has no anxiety
about worldly struggle;
one has completely surrendered oneself,
the world, and everything to God.
Narada-Bhakti Sutras
Much of what we know of Hinduism and its practice was introduced to America at the first Parliament of Worlds Religions in Chicago, 1893. A young a charismatic monk named Swami Vivekananda was the "hit" of the Parliament and was intrumental in also paving the way for Yogananda Parmahanse who later established the Self-Relization Fellowship here in Los Angeles.

Lessons Of Truth
INFINITE POWER
Rev. Marian G. Moon
We are told there is infinite spiritual power to do, to be, and to express who and what we are. This implies unlimited potential for expression and, as Dr. Holmes stated, " . . . we can use it." We can activate it in any way we choose.
For many of us this is an incredible, fantastic, imaginative idea, but without any substance to support it. It sounds good, but does it have a foundation in Truth? Where does it come from? How can we access it? These questions make us wonder if this idea is really true.
It is true. The problem with some of us is we don't know where to get this spiritual power and how to make use of it. However, if we truly consider it we should realize it is present right now, within each one of us. It is always available, and it always responds to us. How is this possible? Spiritual power works through our thoughts and the kinds of ideas we have. It resonates with and directs thought into action.
To use it wisely we only need to acknowledge it and consciously direct it toward what we want. By changing our thought we direct spiritual power in a new way. Through the Law of Mind, it must express the intention of one's thought.
This, then, is how we access this power. It allows us to use it however we choose to think. To manifest or demonstrate our good we only have to believe that this power is responding to us at the level of our thought. Changing conditions and experiencing the new is a matter of choice. Nothing in the universe ever denies our expression when we use our power intentionally for what we want. A new consciousness is the direct result of definite use of this infinite power.

THE FINAL WORD
So
by Philip Booth
So, there's no way to be sure. Not
about much of anything. No more about
anyone else than ourselves. Perhaps
not even of death, except that it's bound
to happen. To you, yes; to me, us: the lot
of humankind, given how humankind sees it
from this near side. So what.
So nothing that we here and now
can perfectly know. Save, though the lens
our eyes raise, the old here and now.
The this, the already-going that moves us.
The red-shift we're constantly part of.
And why not? Between what we were, and
are going to be, is who and how we best love.
"So" by Phillip Booth, from Selves. (c) Viking, 1990.
