MAKING A DIFFERENCE

MORINE BARTLEY

was named

Volunteer of the Month

for OCTOBER 2012

MORINE BARTLEY The wonderful Morine Bartley has recently re-joined the Usher Corps and is serving in that capacity right now.  She was, however, for many, many years the coordinator of our Book Table.  She

kept that commitment, driving in from Palmdale (!) and her commitment was rock-solid.  She is a steady and joyful presence on Sunday and a dedicated student.  Morine is one of the students taking the new Practitioner curriculum in addition to keeping busy with her two jobs--both of which she loves.  Morine is the best of the best and we are grateful for all the ways she leads, serves and supports.  Morine, you make a difference!  Thank you so very much.

FOR YOUR MIND

Universe Is Calling

A fantastic book for the new student or the most advanced.  This is one of the great texts in New Thought and offers fresh insight into perennial wisdom.  We love this book and want to make sure you are well aware of it.

            FOOD  4  THOUGHT

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Melody Beattie

Find the good and praise it.

Alex Haley

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Albert Einstein

 OUR PURPOSE

This Center exists to support all people with the transformation of their lives.  We do this by teaching Spiritual Principle and by celebrating the Promise of Living.

Our philosophy, outlook and practice is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Ernest Holmes.  Our basic textbook is "The Science of Mind" by Dr. Holmes.

Our founding pastor was Dr. David J. Walker.  We honor his legacy by adhering to the essence of the Science of Mind teachings and by treating to know "that the innermost God and the highest God are one and the same."

The purpose of life is to strike a balance between acknowledging our completeness and enjoying our creativity.

What Inspires Me

John McLean pic

We took a brief hiatus from our usual class schedule last week. This created an opportunity for me to get away for some reading, silence, and contemplation. I spent three whole days at the New Camaldolese Hermitage in Big Sur, California.   There in the hills overlooking the ocean, I was able to give my full attention to things that were on my heart. Of course, the big questions never change:  what is mine to do? how do I contribute?  what part of my gift has yet to been given?  I used to think that spending time delving deeply into those questions was a luxury but I now realize it is not-it's mandatory.

If I take Dr. Holmes' work seriously (and I do) and know that I am indeed, an expression of The Thing Itself, then I come to the inevitable conclusion that my most important task is defining my gift - my uniqueness - and making sure I am always about the business of giving it.

For I have come to understand that Life Is For Giving.  Sound familiar?  When I finally claim the very essence of my own self, and start to find ways to share it, to give it away, I find that my needs are met, my time is my own, and nothing can disturb the peace in my soul.  And isn't this what we're really seeking?

As we move into our grand holiday season, it's good that we begin with a season of Giving Thanks.  There are so many, many people who do the most amazing things.  Give thanks for them.  Give thanks for the all the ways things go right.  Even at a time of great challenge and loss because of storms and hurricanes, give thanks for what is working and for those who are busy helping out. Give thanks for all the good our government does by voting on Tuesday.  "In all things, give thanks."

At this Thanksgiving time, I also give thanks for people who have touched my life in important ways.  Each year I make of point of remembering someone who has inspired me by making sure I express my thanks to them in a letter.

Are you willing to take a challenge?  If so...before Thanksgiving Day, write a letter - a real first-class letter - to three people who inspired you in some way.  Write to them and tell them how they inspired you and how their influence continues to inspire you or inform you actions.  It can be anybody - someone you know or a public figure. If you write those letters I promise you that this holiday season will be richer than ever before.  Do it.

THIS IS THE DAY GOD HAS MADE
Edward L. Brown R.Sc.P

This is the day God has made, and I rejoice in It. I know the loving Spirit of God is right where I am, and all is well.

I am continuously blessed with radiant health, loving relationships, and creative self-expression. Today, I embrace these blessings, allowing them to permeate My every thought. This creates the continuation of good in My life. I keep the high watch in thought, word, and deed, knowing I attract what I place into My thought. Today, a positive wave of creative power washes over Me, nourishing Me in harmony with perfect life. I rejoice in this beautiful present and perfect now and I accept this day as My Divine heritage. I am eternally grateful for the freedom of thought that allows Me to express in all My glory. Life is a continuous celebration, and I rejoice

in every moment as it arrives.

With a joy-filled heart, I release My word to the Law of Mind, knowing this is the Truth of My being. THIS IS THE DAY GOD HAS MADE, AND I CREATE ONLY GOOD THIS MOMENT.

And So It Is.

Iroquois Thanksgiving Prayer

We return thanks to our Mother, the Earth, which sustains us.

We return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with water.

We return thanks to all herbs, which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases.

We return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their light when the sun was gone.

We return thanks to the sun, that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye.

Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit, in Whom is embodied all goodness, and Who directs all things for the good of Her children.

THE ESSENTIAL ERNEST HOLMES

November 28, 2012 - February  6, 2013
Wednesdays @ 7PM
Tuition:  $200  plus text     (9 weeks - Credit Hours 30)

This course is a tribute to Dr. Ernest Holmes and all of the wisdom he brought to our world.  The course is structured around our statement of belief -- "What We Believe."  Each week the student has the opportunity to examine each of the ideas contained in it and uncover ways to make the power of this teaching come alive in her/his life.

TEXT:  The Essential Ernest Holmes

Lessons Of Truth

CREATIVE POTENTIAL

Rev. Marian G. Moon

Without conscious awareness we have sometimes been surprised by what we were able to accomplish.  That is ...when we suddenly realized  a power greater than we has taken us beyond our preconceived ideas of what we thought possible. Instances like this register good feelings that take us beyond what we formerly accepted as true for us.

The truth is that we do have unlimited potential ready to manifest and express in new ways.  Lack of this awareness often inhibits our expression until we are challenged to reach beyond our finite beliefs about Self.

As Dr. Holmes taught the power of Mind registers at a level we set for ourselves.  If we think we can't then we won't experience change.  But when we believe we can we open ourselves to creative potential which frees this power for new expression.

People with set belief patterns tend to set restrictions on their creative potential.  But a change of belief can bring a new dimensions in our thinking of Self.  We can challenge those old beliefs and think in new ways.  It is a matter of choice, a matter of decision and the awareness that we are one with an Infinite Intelligence ready to respond to us.  Remind yourself that Mind responds to you when you acknowledge the truth.  It responds the moment you open yourself to this realization.  There are no barriers to truth, only beliefs that seem to temporarily restrict its  expression.

THE FINAL WORD

STARFISH

Eleanor Lerman

This is what life does. It lets you walk up to

the store to buy breakfast and the paper, on a

stiff knee. It lets you choose the way you have

your eggs, your coffee. Then it sits a fisherman

down beside you at the counter who say, Last night,

the channel was full of starfish. And you wonder,

is this a message, finally, or just another day?

Life lets you take the dog for a walk down to the

pond, where whole generations of biological

processes are boiling beneath the mud. Reeds

speak to you of the natural world: they whisper,

they sing. And herons pass by. Are you old

enough to appreciate the moment? Too old?

There is movement beneath the water, but it

may be nothing. There may be nothing going on.

And then life suggests that you remember the

years you ran around, the years you developed

a shocking lifestyle, advocated careless abandon,

owned a chilly heart. Upon reflection, you are

genuinely surprised to find how quiet you have

become. And then life lets you go home to think

about all this. Which you do, for quite a long time.

Later, you wake up beside your old love, the one

who never had any conditions, the one who waited

you out. This is life's way of letting you know that

you are lucky. (It won't give you smart or brave,

so you'll have to settle for lucky.) Because you

were born at a good time. Because you were able

to listen when people spoke to you. Because you

stopped when you should have and started again.

So life lets you have a sandwich, and pie for your

late night dessert. (Pie for the dog, as well.) And

then life sends you back to bed, to dreamland,

while outside, the starfish drift through the channel,

with smiles on their starry faces as they head

out to deep water, to the far and boundless sea.

Eleanor Lerman was raised in the Bronx and Far Rockaway, and has lived in New York City all her life. Her first book of poetry, Armed Love (Wesleyan University Press), was published in 1973 when she was twenty-one and was nominated for a National Book Award.
