NutriFit-type Diet #1 in US News Rankings

Great news! The DASH and Mediterranean-style diets we've been implementing for years in our clients meal programs have been ranked #1 in overall best diet (DASH) and #1 in Plant Based Diets (Mediterranean). The Mediterranean Diet was also ranked  #3 in overall best diets. Additionally, the DASH style diet was best in improving overall health as well as for prevention of heart disease and diabetes. Our standard NutriFit plans adhere to the principles of both of these dietary platforms.

From Seed to Plate

Because it's the middle of winter (even though it may not seem like it), the farm is less productive right now then it will be in the spring. However, I have organic spinach and am expecting the first plants to be harvested around the end of February.

We are trying cauliflower this year and should be harvesting about mid-March or a little earlier, depending on the weather. The new Blue Dwarf kale starts are growing well and will start harvesting in late February or early March.

I'm attempting to ramp up the production of lettuce with 3 different types of leaf lettuce and a baby romaine variety that I'm trying for the first time. Harvesting should start about the end of February.

What I'm most excited about is our first attempt at Hydroponic growing. I'm testing the field grown lettuces vs. the Hydroponic grown for both time to harvest and quality using the same variety of seeds. Because of the drought conditions here in California, we all need to see what can be done to conserve water. Our hydroponically grown lettuce will require significantly less water then the field grown. Additionally I'm using what is called deep water cultivation which does not require water pumps, timers, and complicated plumbing. Will keep you posted as to results.

Foods that Fight Wrinkles

What's the secret to aging beautifully? A healthy diet is one of the major ones! There are many foods we can eat that fight wrinkles and improve our skin. Look for foods that are high in protein, magnesium and vitamin C to help promote collagen growth. Also, try tomatoes, as they have been shown to have anti-aging effects. Green and yellow vegetables contain carotenoids and antioxidants that fight free radicals which break down collagen over time. Additionally, adding plant-based omega 3s (including flax seeds and chia seeds) to your diet can improve dryness associated with aging, and improve skin elasticity.

For more skin tips, check out this week's "Weighing In" segment on Food Exposed with Jackie Keller! Watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NdY6OzG3F4&feature=youtu.be

Also, check out my recipe for Strawberry n'Flax Muffins in the Recipe section of my blog featuring, you guessed it, flax seeds!
