Exercising Our First Amendment Rights
On January 27, peaceful rallies took place around St. Louis and throughout the nation to share the message that immigrants and refugees are welcome. Join us in any way you can to spread the message!

On January 27, President Trump signed an Executive Order which banned all refugees for 120 days. The EO also restricted entry to the US for others, including, at least temporarily, visa holders from seven Muslim-majority countries. Syrian refugees were also banned longer-term.

The result has been a gut-wrenching several days, especially for refugees. Even those who have reached safe haven are frantic. They worry about family members, some of whom were so close to following them to St. Louis that they were already booked on flights. And they fear the harsh rhetoric that some Americans are voicing, as well as the potential for more anti-refugee action. It is such a shame because refugees love America!

Meanwhile, the number and size of rallies are growing daily. Faith and other influentials including government officials, corporate leaders, and many, many concerned citizens are increasingly speaking with one voice. Their outpourings of compassion and support reflect the America most refugees long to join!

Thanks to those of you who have been exercising your First Amendment rights. And I especially thank those of you who have been reaching out to us to offer your help. We are overwhelmed by your support and desire to take action.

As I responded recently: write cards to leave at the Institute to welcome our newest Muslim neighbors. Place welcome signs on your lawns or in your windows. And, above all, welcome EVERY foreign-born individual you meet with a BIG smile.

Together we can make a difference!
