Mayor Slay Receives Institute Award
Honoring his welcoming support for immigrants
The International Institute Award featured a photo of Mayor Francis G. Slay with the Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric of Bosnia & Hercegovina. The photo was taken in 2008 at the dedication of St. Louis' first minaret, located at the Islamic Center on Devonshire in South City. Pictured here: Mayor Slay accepts the award from Anna Crosslin.
On June 27, Mayor Francis G. Slay was presented with the International Institute Award to recognize his unwavering support during his 15 years as Mayor toward making immigrants and refugees feel welcome in St. Louis. Presenter Anna Crosslin, IISTL president, also announced the Institute's All Faiths Meditation Center was being named in the Mayor's honor.
Crosslin remarked that the Mayor has been steadfast in his support throughout his tenure. But in the last year in the face of anti-refugee and anti-Syrian hate, she had especially appreciated his active support.
In addition, Crosslin noted that Mayor Slay has joined other metropolitan mayors to sign on to numerous letters to support Syrian and other refugee resettlement and immigration. He has also presented at meetings and otherwise lent his support.
