The International Institute sponsored 511 refugees in the recently completed federal fiscal year (October 1 - September 30).
We actually expected 625 arrivals, but overseas processing was delayed due to additional clearance procedures established last winter by Homeland Security. As a result, less than 30% actually arrived in St. Louis in the first six months of the fiscal year. Refugee arrivals only started to pick up in June 2012. In all, 53% of refugees arrived between June and September, 2012.
Almost 45% of arrivals were Bhutanese who have been living in refugee camps in Nepal. Another 20% were Somali.

New Board Members Elected
Richardson and Whitford Join Board
Wendy Richardson MasterCard Worldwide -- VP, Customer Publications Wendy leads the MasterCard Customer Publications team, with the charter of developing and delivering the technical information customers need to do business with MasterCard; in partnership with internal business partners and stakeholders.
As an advocate for diversity, Wendy was the lead chair of the St. Louis Lifting Employees of African Descent (LEAD) Business Resource Group at MasterCard from 2008-2010. She is a Fellow of the St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative class of 2010 and a graduate of the Leadership STL Class of 2012. Wendy has received many awards and honors for outstanding performance throughout her career, including the Harlem YMCA Black Achievers in Industry Award.
Jeffrey Whitford Sigma-Aldrich -- Global Citizenship Manager Jeffrey is responsible for developing strategic programs designed to enhance Sigma-Aldrich's position as a global leader in environmental sustainability and social responsibility. He works to integrate sustainable development concepts into the strategic plans for each of Sigma-Aldrich's business units including the development of master plans for energy management, water conservation and waste reduction.
He directs the company's largest global citizenship initiative, Team Sigma-Aldrich, where more than 2,000 employees in 14 countries participate in charitable events designed to benefit their local communities. In addition to Team Sigma-Aldrich, Whitford also manages the Sigma-Aldrich Foundation and corporate philanthropy for the company. He also oversees the communications program related to Global Citizenship, including the company's annual sustainability report. |
