Issue: Art NewsWinter 2014

Carolesmiling
Dear Friends,
We have reached the end of another interesting year in the art world. Soaring auction prices, new and exciting gallery and museum exhibitions openings.  Galerie Perrotin from Paris opened on Madison Ave. and Gagosian, also on Madison Ave., suprised us with a Zen like, remarkable exhibition by potter and author Edmund de Waal.

Fashion and art have collided as never before.  Since the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art we have had Punk: Chaos to Couture and now "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk."

It is also a opportunity to introduce one of my favorite artists, Bill Drew and his extraordinary body of new work. I have been following Bill's work for many years and recently I had a chance to revisit his studio and was so impressed that I had to make him the Featured Artist.

Bill has a life long interest in Renaissance painting, influenced by his years spent in Florence, Italy as a Fulbright Scholar and as a professor at Rhode Island School of Design.  He  teaches classes in Florence, Italy each year, enabling him to revisit his favorite artists and paintings.

As you will see when you view his paintings, color is a most important issue to Bill. "I use color to both complement and contradict the space in my paintings, seeking resolution in ambiguity."

His palette is remarkable using subtle, brilliant colors, pure pigment that he seeks out from all over Europe, looking for and finding that rare color. " I paint with pure pigment suspended in natural binders, which gives me a deeply saturated color, intense yet soft in its own way, reminiscent of fresco painting," states Bill Drew.

The paintings draw you in as you discover and rediscover areas not seen before. Please take the time to review Bill Drew's portfolio as you will be amply rewarded.

We look forward to working with you as you start or add to your collection. Free consultations are available upon request.
Please call to arrange a studio visit.

Regards,

Costumes For A Warrior and a Simple Man Painting 86"X 74"

Bill Drew's work engages us immediately requiring us to interact with the painting. His palette is soft yet strong his lines are sharp and the visual is compelling.

Drew's paintings require you to look, to see, to visit and revisit in order to understand his visual language.  His paintings are intelligent, demanding and engaging.

The texture, colors, size and subject matter require your attention.  They, like us, are individual, no two the same, unique and complex.  Bill Drew presents a narrative and we construct our own story based on our engagement with the painting and what we bring in terms of our own personal psychology.

The quality of Drew's work is ever evolving as he consistently pushes the envelope and himself to new heights.

A Studio Visit to Abiquiu Artist Doug Coffin
The incredible views that drew Georgia O'Keefe to Abiquiu, also resonated with artist, Doug Coffin. I was fortunate to have an opportunity to visit his beautiful new studio above the white mountains of Abiquiu.

Doug's paintings, sculpture and remarkable totems were in a wonderful exhibition  at the White House.

His abstract totem poles blend the rich imagery of his Native American heritage in an undeniably contemporary style. Coffin says, "I have always been fascinated with the medicine and war shields that were often painted from visions. The heart of my work continues to reflect their spiritual significance." His work has been exhibited widely throughout the world, including the Grand Palais in Paris and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
