We're committed to bringing the best care to Northeast Georgia. That's why we've added a new physician group - HospitalMD - to assist our Emergency Department in providing faster access to lifesaving care. Our new team also provides hospitalist services, allowing patients with out-of-town physicians to be admitted and cared for at Elbert Memorial Hospital. Our new physicians will be on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - just another way we are working hard to provide better care to our community.

Are you over 50? Schedule a lifesaving colonoscopy
Screening for colorectal cancer is a proven lifesaver. A colonoscopy can actually prevent cancer since it can lead to the detection and removal of polyps, some of which may progress to cancer.

The American Cancer Society expects more than 50,000 people to die of the disease this year, yet only 60 percent of those who should have a colonoscopy have had one. Doctors recommend a colonoscopy for people over 50 years old.

Please contact Lake Russell Specialty Healthcare Services at 706-213-2580 or your primary care provider to take action.

It's that time again: Get your vaccine for flu season
While current U.S. flu activity is low overall, localized influenza outbreaks have been reported. Influenza activity often begins to increase in October.
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. Now is a good time to get vaccinated. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for protection to set in.

Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses and prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Flu vaccines have been updated for the 2016-2017 flu season.. More than 90 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccine have been distributed at this time.

Influenza Symptoms
Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
  •          Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  •          Cough
  •          Sore throat
  •          Runny or stuffy nose
  •          Muscle or body aches
  •          Headaches
  •          Fatigue (tiredness)
  •          Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
* It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

AnMed Health brings Sleep Lab to Elberton area
The AnMed Health Sleep Lab at Elbert Memorial Hospital is now accepting patients by physician referral.

The Sleep Center includes two EMH rooms outfitted for comfort - more like a hotel room than a hospital room. Patients who take part in a sleep study will learn important information about how much they sleep at night and the quality of their breathing during sleep. The sleep study will be conducted by technicians and the results will be interpreted by one of three AnMed Health board certified sleep specialists.

"A poor night's sleep is not just an inconvenience that causes sleepiness and fatigue the next day," says Jeff Cotton, sleep clinic manager at AnMed Health Lung and Sleep Center. "Severe sleep problems can mean serious medical problems. People with moderate to severe sleep apnea face an increased risk of stroke, for example. There are also links to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression and cognitive decline. If anyone has said your breathing isn't normal while you sleep, it could be time to talk to your physician."

Area residents who have not yet talked to a doctor about potential sleep problems can take an online assessment at www.emhcare.net. Results of the assessment can be printed out and taken to the physician visit for discussion.
