News from Rep. Pam Dickerson | Georgia House District 113
October 8, 2015
Rep. Pam Dickerson

I want to thank everyone who jointed us for the Women's Wellness event on Sept. 26 at Rockdale Medical Center (see photos below). The event was a success. Our health screenings found one constituent with signs of an abnormality, and we are going to follow through as her condition receives medical treatment.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, I will be hosting an anti-bullying rally in October at Rockdale High School with alumnus Grady Jarrett, a star football player for Clemson University and the Atlanta Falcons, as the featured speaker.

As always, feel free to contact me with your views on the issues facing our state, or whenever I can be of service. Thank you for allowing me to continue to serve you in the Georgia General Assembly.

Issues begin to take shape for 2016 legislative session
Georgia State Capitol
A number of legislative study committee have been busy this summer with public hearings on the issues assigned to them, and these discussions sometimes provide a good preview of what to expect on the agenda for the 2016 session, which is now only three months away.
Some of the legislative proposals that might come out of these study committees that will be worth watching during the next session include:
  •  Authorizing and regulating the private cultivation of cannabis for medical use.
  •  Tightening the labor laws on the use of "independent contractor" status by certain business to avoid employee payroll taxes and workers compensation premiums.
  • Strengthening the state laws dealing with the incorporation of new cities or the expansion of current cities' boundaries through annexation.
  • Changing the salary formula for educators to a performance, rather than the current experience-and-training basis.
  • Consideration of a constitutional amendment to pari-mutuel wagering for horse racing and/or casino gaming to meet a rising demand for HOPE scholarships and other educational expenditures.
  • Another effort to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which stalled in the House Judiciary Committee this year.
  • A proposal to reduce the state income tax and raise the state sales tax.
  • Gov. Nathan Deal's proposal to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court of Georgia from seven to nine.
Between now and January, I encourage you to contact me with your thoughts on these and other issues.
