February 2014

We are excited to announce our Vail Vertical Express was a huge success, forging new relationships and creating many new memories!  Over 180 people joined us on the mountain to celebrate the 50th Anniversary (to the day) of when our founder Jimmie Heuga and his good friend and teammate Billy Kidd became the first American men to medal in the Olympics on February 8th,1964 in Innsbruck, Austria.

To help us celebrate, Vail mountain renamed a ski run to "Jimmie Heuga Express" for the day! Billy Kidd along with Jimmie's three sons Wilder, Blaze and Winston led a memorial ski down to honor and remember our founder. Participants also enjoyed an on-mountain scavenger hunt, slalom racing and après party where Winston Heuga's bluegrass band, 10th Mountain Division, cranked out some tunes!

We raised $33,383 (and counting...) at the Vail event and are looking forward to our next three Vertical Express for Can Do MS events at Squaw Valley, CA and Crystal Mountain, WA on March 1st and Schweitzer Mountain, ID on March 8th! Register for the these events by clicking the button below!

Dan attended our CAN DO® Program in 2011 and has been using the tools and tips he learned from the program to stay active. As a Colorado native, skiing had been a sport he always enjoyed, but had given up because of MS. Last weekend, Dan summoned the courage to go ski again for the first time in 10 years. He was invited to participate in a pilot adaptive ski program hosted by Can Do MS, after just a few short hours on the slopes he was...

'Intimacy' isn't just about sexual feelings and sexual activity - although that's one important part we'll talk about later. Intimacy is about effective communication, trust and respect, shared values and expectations, and a balanced give-and take. Maintaining intimacy can be difficult in any relationship, but the stresses of MS - its unpredictability, progressive nature, complex symptoms and financial impact - can challenge any couple. Feelings of...Read Article

Question:
Submitted by: Nanc A., Living with MS

I've learned that MRIs of people with secondary progressive MS often show no new activity and no new enhanced lesions, even as their walking and balance worsen through time. After those same results for many years, should I continue to get more MRIs?

Answer:
Can Do MS Programs Consultants: David E. Jones, MD

Multiple sclerosis starts as a primarily inflammatory disease that we call "relapsing remitting," which over time transitions into a more degenerative disease that we term "secondary progressive"; however, in actuality, most MS patients have pathologic evidence of both processes, so the relevance of these terms is somewhat...Read full answer from Neurologist.
