SPEECH

Reading and Language

Reading and looking at books with your children are great ways to expand language and prereading skills. The following suggestions provide opportunities. Just avoid drilling your children and keep it fun!

  • Read every day to your children...make it a routine, find a comfy spot
  • Read stories with repetitive phrases
  • Use different voices for different characters
  • Read stories with lots of pictures and have your child "read" the story by filling in sentences for you
  • Reread your child's favorite stories over and over. It's okay. Kids learn through repetition
  • Ask questions that are appropriate for your child's level about the story and pictures
  • Talk about the pictures in the book and ask your child to point as you name them
  • Read books related to NIS curriculum themes to reinforce themes and target vocabulary.
  • Make your own books...of different categories, use magazine pictures, take pictures of your child doing different things, make homemade photo albums with pictures of family events with captions, friends, outings, holidays, etc... Get your child to help you make them and the captions if able to

Examples:  My Red Book, My Favorite Toys, My Favorite Foods, My 4th Birthday Party, My Best Friends, Grandma's Sleepover, Our Winter Break, Baking with My Sister, etc...

  • Let your children see you reading and they will be more likely to pick up books too!!!
  • Remember to check out your local library so you don't have to spend a lot of money.

HAVE FUN!!!!

FUNDRAISING

The children had a blast burning up their energy at Imaginations at Play over February break. We are glad so many parents got to know each other and that the children had the opportunity to play with one another outside of the classroom.  Due to its popularity and positive feedback, we hope to plan a similar gathering over April break!

Thank you for donating items to be raffled off at our Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner.   We are so grateful for your support!  We hope you will be able to attend the dinner, which is taking place on Friday, March 13th, from 4 - 8 PM at the IGHL Opportunity Center.  There will be tons of raffle baskets you can win, and proceeds will benefit NIS Child Care!

We are excited to announce that several board members from the Richard J. O'Brien Foundation visited our school on February 26th and presented us with a $25,000 check.  We were honored to once again be chosen as a recipient of the funds raised at their annual golf outing.  The Richard J. O'Brien Foundation honors the memory of Rich O'Brien, who passed away in September 2010. Throughout his life, Rich was actively involved in helping NIS and other non-profit organizations that help children across Long Island, so his family and friends pulled together to form a foundation to continue his generous work in his memory. We are so grateful for their continued support of our school and look forward to showing them the playground we were able to build in Rich's memory with their donations.

We are currently looking for help in planning our upcoming walk-a-thon/fun day at Shorefront Park and our Golf Outing in June.  We are looking for vendors, medical practitioners, sponsors and volunteers.  We are also always in need of items to be raffled off at our events. Contact Susan Cali, Director of Development, at 631-924-5583, ext. 128 or [email protected] for more information.  We hope you will be able to attend both of these exciting events!

PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT NIS CHILD CARE.

The Incredible Years program is used throughout the school with our teachers and children in order to promote positive behaviors.  The parent workshops are part of this overall program, and provide practical solutions to everyday problems you may face with your child.  The topics that will be covered include:
  • How to manage specific problem behaviors
  • How to address negative behaviors in your home
  • How to use praise and rewards to promote positive behaviors
  • A new approach towards playing with your child to promote learning
  • How to improve limit setting with your child
These workshops will be presented at NIS over an eight-week period.  They started Wednesday, February 25th, and will continue weekly on Wednesdays, from 9:45 AM to 10:45 PM through April 15th.

While it is recommended that you attend all eight sessions, we understand that it may be difficult, and encourage you to come to this workshop even if you cannot make all eight sessions.

Please contact School Psychologist, Samantha Boutis, Psy.D., at 924-5583, ext. 504 with any questions.
