SPEECH

NIS has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Knapp-Swezey Foundation
for use in our FEEDING PROGRAM!

The speech department is happy to report that our NIS Feeding Program is really taking off. By now, most of our classes are participating in Focused Snack Time and those that are not will be very soon. It's been a lot of fun. Kids are presented with a small sample of the same food every day for a week. They are encouraged to smell, touch, bite, kiss, lick, hopefully play with and explore the food. This past month we had some fun with yogurt, pineapple and whole wheat bread.

Our food groups are going great too!  Many of the children that wouldn't tolerate different foods are now tolerating them on a plate near them, touching them, licking, biting, kissing and even eating them!!!  Last month we explored RED foods. In January we will be introducing BROWN foods.  ALL GREAT STUFF!!

Now that we've received the generous grant from Knapp-Swezey, we will be able to continue to see amazing progress with our Feeding Program.  We will keep you posted. Don't forget to give your speech therapists and teachers updates on any improvements you are seeing with your children.

Your children can learn language, cognitive and other skills from playing with some of the most basic toys they've just gotten for the holidays!

FUNDRAISING

Thank You for your participation in our #GivingTuesday appeal and for attending our Breakfast with Santa and/or Chuck E. Cheese fundraising events this past month.  Due to your support, we were able to raise much-needed funds for the students we serve.

Don't forget to get chocolates for your loved ones in time for Valentine's Day!  Order forms for Dove Chocolates will come home with NIS students on Monday, January 5th.  If you'd like to order chocolates and you do not have a student that attends NIS, please contact Susan Cali at 631-924-5583, ext. 128.  Orders due on Friday, January 16th, with a guaranteed delivery before Valentine's Day!

Did your children receive any unwanted gifts for the holidays?  NIS will gladly accept unopened toys as donations!  These toys will be used in raffle prizes to be used to raise funds for NIS students!  We are always open to new ways to raise funds and welcome your suggestions at our monthly Parent Council meetings. Our next meeting, as outlined on the calendar, is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Friday, January 16th.  We've changed the day of the meeting to attract new members. Parent Council meetings are a great way to get to know other families and plan activities that will directly benefit your children.  We are currently in need of volunteers to help us plan our Family Fun Day at Shorefront Park, which will take place in April.  Please contact Susan Cali at 631-924-5583, ext. 128 to sign up or learn other ways you can become more involved at NIS!
