PHYSICAL THERAPY
October was National Physical Therapy Month ... and this year we hope you got to see the display that the physical therapists set up in the lobby.  In addition to highlighting each therapist and naming some of the gross motor skills and activities that we introduce to your children, there are also handouts that describe the expansive role of physical therapy in preschool, and lists of suggested FUN activities that could be taken home and which would encourage the development of a strong motor foundation.

Not every child at NIS receives physical therapy, but there is no denying that a child's preschool years are years of exploration and growth in all areas, and gross motor development is an important part.  We are here to help, and everyone should feel free to contact us either directly or through your child's teacher with any questions or concerns you may have.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

                                    Before                                                             After
Some of the classes are participating in "Mat Man", which is one of the aspects of Handwriting Without Tears (Get Set for School Pre-K).  HWT is a hands-on, developmental approach that makes handwriting readiness fun.  Mat Man teaches children how to draw a person, and the pieces used, are the lines and curves needed to form letters.  It also teaches body awareness and spacial relations.

SPEECH
Is your child a picky eater?  If so, be sure to click here now to learn about the importance of eating together as a family and introducing a "try bowl."  Read on to learn more!
CHILDREN & FAMILY SERVICES
Our Children and Family Services (CFS) department has been busy this past month planning for the holidays. Once again, we will be providing Thanksgiving food baskets for NIS children and families in need. Each of our classes and departments will be putting together a basket for a family, and we are asking for your assistance with donations to fill these baskets.  Giving is a privilege that can make the holidays even more joyful for those who can give.  The holiday season spirit of giving is ensuring that we all will have the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks together. Flyers will be coming home soon regarding these giving opportunities.  If you are a family in need and would be interested in being a recipient, please call our Children and Family Services Department, and we will be more than happy to assist you.
FUNDRAISING

NIS is a not for profit school that relies on the generosity of your donations to enhance the programs and services we provide to our students, so your participation in any of our fundraisers is greatly appreciated.  If you prefer, you may just make an online donation by clicking here or make a check payable to Friends of NIS in any amount you are comfortable with and send it to school in a sealed envelope to the attention of Susan Cali, Director of Development.  All donations are 100% tax-deductible.  We even have a scholarship fund you can donate to to help students receive the education they need and deserve regardless of their economic background.

We are always open to new ways to raise funds and welcome your suggestions at our monthly Parent Council meetings. Our next meeting, as outlined on the calendar, is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Thursday, November 13th.  At this meeting, we will go over the specifics of the Vendor Fair, and start planning our December activities.

October was an exciting month at NIS!  We had firefighters from the Yaphank Fire Department come with their trucks and emergency equipment to teach the students about fire safety.  Bumi, one of our pet  therapy dogs, visited with students in Miss Meghan, Miss Katrina and Miss Brittany's classes.  A dental hygienist from Stony Brook came to teach the children how to take proper care of their teeth. Miss Stephanie, Miss Linda M., and Miss Darlene took their students on a field trip to the farm.

All of the students participated in many engaging fall activities with pumpkins and apples this month, culminating with an exciting special event complete with a pumpkin patch and a petting zoo, right here at NIS!  The children truly enjoyed parading around the hallways dressed up in their Halloween costumes, too!

Quote of the Month: Desmond in Miss Stephanie's class coined the term "Apple Pie-Overs" when their class was making apple turnovers this month!

We have a lot in store for November, including a Thanksgiving Feast and our first NIS Craft Fair!  We can't wait to enjoy these festivities with our NIS family!
NEW CLASS / NEW LOCATION!
NIS and the Patchogue Y are proud to announce our collaboration in opening a new inclusion class at the Patchogue Y!  This five day class will meet Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM!  Call NIS at 924-5583 or e-mail [email protected] for more details!
RICHARD J. O'BRIEN PLAYGROUND
Exciting News!  The Richard J. O'Brien Playground is now officially open!  This playground is named after our friend and beloved supporter, Richard J. O'Brien, who passed away in September 2010.  We could not have built this state of the art playground without the funds the Richard J. O'Brien Foundation has provided to us the past few years.    To learn more about the Richard J. O'Brien Foundation, please visit their website here.
