Thank You so much for your feedback on the music surveys that came home. We are excited to try to integrate the variety of cultures and musical interests you have described into our music curriculum. We've learned that our students have been exposed to and enjoy songs and instruments from a variety of cultures and genres. Hindi, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Irish, Filipino, Portuguese, and Colombian music were all mentioned, as well as
, salsa and meringue. Contemporary music and children's songs, specifically "Let It Go" from Frozen were popular responses, and most children's favorite instrument was the drums!

You may have already heard about Bumi from your children. Bumi is a certified Pet Therapy dog that visits each class three times a year. This adorable Shih Tzu has already visited with several of our classes. Bumi is scheduled to visit with Miss Meghan (AM), Miss Katrina (AM), Miss Mary (AM & PM), Miss Brittany (AM & PM), Miss Debbie (PM) and Miss Jessica (PM) this month. See the schedule for details.
Our other pet therapy dog, a Labrador Retreiver named Reiss, works alongside our therapists and is currently scheduled to come in once monthly at 10 AM to visit with various students. All of the students truly enjoy having the dogs visit.

RICHARD J. O'BRIEN PLAYGROUND
|
Exciting News! Construction for our new playground began on Monday, September 29th! This playground will be named after our friend and beloved supporter, Richard J. O'Brien, who passed away in September 2010. We could not have built this state of the art playground without the funds the Richard J. O'Brien Foundation has provided to us the past few years.
On September 22nd, they held a well-attended Golf Outing at the Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. We are honored to once again have been chosen as a recipient of a portion of the proceeds earned at this event. To learn more about the Richard J. O'Brien Foundation, please visit their website here.

If you prefer, you may just make an online donation by clicking here or make a check payable to Friends of NIS in any amount you are comfortable with and send it to school in a sealed envelope to the attention of Susan Cali, Director of Development. All donations are 100% tax-deductible. We even have a scholarship fund you can donate to to help students receive the education they need and deserve regardless of their economic background.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Golf Committee, we were able to install new flooring in our gym, OT/PT rooms, and open space just last week!
We are always open to new ways to raise funds and welcome your suggestions at our monthly Parent Council meetings. Our next meeting, as outlined on the calendar, is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Thursday, October 9th. Our largest fundraiser of the year is our Golf Outing, which will take place on June 15th, and preparations are already underway. We're proud to report that the children have adjusted wonderfully to the new school year! We are seeing big smiles each day and are amazed at how quickly the children have learned the daily routines.
Thank You for coming to Back to School Night. I'm sure you enjoyed meeting the staff and seeing the classrooms where your children spend their days. At NIS, we strongly believe in the rights of parents to have a real voice in their children's education, so your presence at these events is encouraged and greatly appreciated.
We have a lot of fun things in store this month, and look forward to enjoying them with the entire NIS family!

The NIS Speech Department is very excited to implement our new NIS Feeding Program, which includes mealtime strategies, special food groups and the introduction to healthy foods during snack time. The guidelines and approaches we are implementing are supported by evidence based research and are proven to be successful in helping children expand their food repertoire from the picky eaters to the children with more involved feeding difficulties. Parents will be hearing from their Speech Therapists in the coming weeks!
