A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

JAY SILVERSTEIN, Ph.D.

I am excited and honored to welcome you to the NIS family. This promises to be an enriching and joyful year for the children, their families, and our staff. NIS has a long history of providing services of unique quality to its students, and we are committed to living up to and improving upon that tradition. We have developed new programs to further enrich your child's experience at NIS, and we will be working closely with families to make sure these programs best meet the needs of your child. We encourage and truly welcome input from parents; your voice in your child's education may well be the most important perspective any school will ever receive! I look forward to seeing you at one of our many events held throughout the year.

Dear Friends of NIS,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!  We are thrilled to see those of you who are returning, and getting to know those families who are new to NIS this fall!  We have many exciting activities planned for students and their families this year, and look forward to having a wonderful year of learning, growing, and flourishing together.

All of the children at NIS will be introduced to new concepts through different themes each month, culminating in monthly special events, which families are welcome to attend. The first special event revolving around the "All About Me" theme is scheduled for 9/22, 9/23 and 9/24, and will be held in the Open Space.  Schedules specific to your child's class will come home in children's backpacks.

At NIS, we strongly believe in the rights of parents to have a voice in their child's education, and encourage open communication between families and staff members.  Teachers will send all important correspondence home with your child in his/her backpack, so be sure to check it daily, and feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.     Please 'like' us on Facebook today, as we update our page daily with important information and post fun snap shots of school activities.  This monthly e-newsletter will also serve as a good reference for you, as it will have all of the important dates and information you will need for the month.

We encourage attendance at our Parent Council meetings, where you can learn ways you can help us at school events and fundraisers, hear speakers present information relevant to your child's education, join committees, and more. Our first Parent Council Meeting is tentatively scheduled for 10/9 at 9:30 AM. Meeting dates will be posted on monthly e-newsletters and flyers will be sent home in children's backpacks.

You will have the opportunity to visit your child's classroom and meet the staff at Back to School Night, scheduled for Tuesday, September 30th, at 7 PM.  We look forward to seeing all of you! Our goal is to make NIS a home away from home.  We look forward to another fun year at NIS!

Sincerely,

Susan Cali

NIS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The New Interdisciplinary School (NIS) receives funding from New York State and the Suffolk County Department of Health to cover tuition and transportation for children with special needs, however, other students are required to pay tuition.  Research shows that when children attend a high-quality pre-school program, they're better prepared for kindergarten and beyond.  That's why, at NIS, we strongly believe every child should be provided with a quality education from the earliest years, regardless of their economic background.

In today's society, the cost of quality child care prevents several families from being able to enroll their children in pre-school and makes it very difficult for working parents to be able to continue working.   The goal of the NIS Scholarship Fund is to assist low-income families in our community with the cost of enrolling their children in nursery school, pre-kindergarten, or child care, because every child deserves a safe, nurturing place to learn and play.  We welcome donations in any amount.

Scholarships are dependent on availability of funding and eligibility is determined based on financial need. For more information, please visit www.niskids.org or contact Susan Cali, Director of Development, at (631) 924-5583, ext. 128 or via e-mail at [email protected]

The Richard J. O'Brien Foundation honors the memory of Rich O'Brien, who passed away in September 2010. Throughout his life, Rich was actively involved in helping NIS and other non-profit organizations that helped children across Long Island, so his family and friends pulled together to form a foundation to continue his generous work in his memory. NIS has been a proud recipient of the funds raised at the Richard J. O'Brien Golf Outings for the past few years, and has once again been chosen as a recipient of a portion of the funds raised at the 2014 Outing. We hope you can join us!
