SPEECH NEWS

 In this month's issue:

This Month's Verbal Gem
While reading There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly with a little boy, the therapist paused to see if he could name the next animal in the story.  The boy then said, "You can give me a moment just to think about it!"

Dear NIS Friend,

This February, we said goodbye to Helen Wilder, who had served as the Executive Director of NIS for the past 21 years.   Helen was one of the founders of NIS, and worked here for 36 years!  She is loved by all who have had the privilege of working with her and will be missed by all.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Jay Silverstein as the new Executive Director of NIS.  He brings many years of experience with him and is committed to carrying on NIS's mission.  As Helen explained, "The students at NIS will continue to learn in a loving and nurturing environment, which is the core of NIS."

February was an exciting month at NIS!  Students in the following classes had the opportunity to meet with Bumi, our Pet Therapy dog (AM): Deirdre, Darlene, Karen, and Kathy, and (PM): Debbie, Jessica, Mary, and Brittany.  Pictures can be viewed by going to our school's picture site, password: niskids.

Many families also gathered together at Bounce U over February Break, and the kids had a blast bouncing, all while helping NIS raise much needed funds for our school.  It was a very successful fundraiser!!  Tickets sold out!!  Thank You!

Robert Bresnahan of Merrill Lynch, a long time supporter of NIS, has agreed to be the honoree for the 2014 NIS Golf Outing, and we are so pleased!   If you or anyone you know is interested in helping us make this event a success, please contact Susan Cali for more information.

We have a lot to look foward to this month, including IGHL's 24th Annual St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner and Chinese Auction, taking place on March 14th. Thank You to all who have contributed items for the Chinese Auction baskets.  We rely on attractive Chinese Auction baskets to make the event a success, so we are very grateful to those of you who donated.  Read on to learn more about the event.  We hope to see you there!

HELP NIS TODAY!

NIS is a not for profit school that provides a range of therapeutic and educational programs for both typically developing and developmentally delayed children from birth to five years old.  NIS does receive funding from New York State and Suffolk County to cover programs and services for students with disabilities; however, we rely on donations to enhance these programs and services.

NIS is a circle of people who envelop those we serve with warmth, enlightenment, and security.  We are a creative learning center for the community, for children with disabilities, and those who are typically developing.  Our commitment to provide therapeutic and educational services with love and the highest standard of expertise to all who come to NIS remains constant, strong, and deep.  Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today!
