October was an exciting month at NIS! The Yaphank Fire Department visited NIS and students were able to learn about fire safety, see the inside of a fire truck and learn about the equipment used in fighting fires. They also learned all about ambulances and were taught what to do in the event of an emergency. The students truly seemed to enjoy this visit.
Some of our students had the opportunity to meet Bumi, one of the dogs we use for pet therapy. Bumi and other therapy dogs will be returning to NIS to meet with more students all throughout the year. All students will have had the opportunity to meet with a therapy dog before the end of the year. The classes Bumi will visit this month are listed on the schedule to the left.
At our Halloween Celebration, students had a blast picking pumpkins and feeding farm animals at school! They also enjoyed participating in the Halloween parade!

CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES
Our Children and Family Services (CFS) department has been busy this past month planning for the holidays. We will be providing Thanksgiving food baskets for our NIS children and families in need this year. Each of our classes and departments will be putting together a basket for a family, and we are asking for your assistance with donations to fill these baskets. Giving is a privilege that can make the holidays even more joyful for those who can give. The holiday season spirit of giving is ensuring that we all will have the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks together. See the flyer we sent out previously or give us a call if you need more info.
CFS Psychologists and Social Workers are facilitating several support groups this year, some during the day and some in the evening. We recognize that families of children with disabilities are in a unique position to help each other with emotional support, innovative ideas and shared knowledge. Our support groups and ongoing parent workshops have been well attended and are off to a good start this year. We are happy to have been able to add a daytime "Incredible Years Parenting Workshop" and an evening "Spanish Speaking General Support Group" as well. New members are always welcome! See the attached flyer for descriptions and schedules of groups and workshops.
Boneh G. Avidor, Psychologist and Coordinator of CFS will be doing a presentation at the November 8th meeting of the NIS Parent Council on "Play: Why is it so important for child development?" Samatha Boutis, Psychologist, will will do a presentation at the November 12th Parent Council meeting on "Development in your Preschooler."
Children and Families Services is also proud to announce a new addition to our staff. Christie Schrank-Krupa, School Psychologist, will be joining us on November 4th. Her experience and her enthusiasm are a welcome addition and we all look forward to working together with her to help our students reach their goals.

PARENT COUNCIL
Our first Parent Council Meeting had a great turn-out and was very productive. We hope to continue to grow attendance at our Parent Council meetings, and are offering an evening meeting in addition to the regularly scheduled morning meeting, in order to accommodate different schedules. Your presence and input are greatly valued, and we hope by adding this additional meeting time, more parents will be able to attend. Please see the schedule for dates and times of our November meetings.

GOLF COMMITTEE
We are looking to expand our Golf Committee. Our outing will take place in early June, but we are currently in the planning stages of this large fundraiser and appreciate your participation in helping make it a success! If you are unable to attend our planning meetings or outing, but have any corporate contacts who would be interested in sponsoring our event, please contact us. We are also appreciative of any raffle prizes you can donate to us for our big event!
