Millionaire Football Plans Benefit Dinner for Aug. 27

The Williamsport Area High School football program plans to host its first scholarship benefit dinner from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the Genetti Hotel.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help establish the Millionaire Football Award Fund at the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation.

The award fund will be used to recognize graduating members of the football team who finish their senior season in good standing with the team, across all four years, while also having enrolled in any form of higher education.

"This award will provide the community and team an opportunity to thank the graduating players for their years of dedicated service to the team," said Head Coach Charles Crews. "Playing football and maintaining exemplary grades is not an easy task.  If it were, then everyone would do it.  This award will allow us to thank them for doing what others could not or would not do.  I am looking forward to this being a tradition that will continue forever."

The evening also is part of the 1986 Williamsport football reunion weekend, which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1986 team that went 12-1 and won the Eastern Conference Championships.  Several members of that year's team are scheduled to be in attendance.

The dinner, which will include a 50/50 and silent auction, is open to the public.  Long-time Millionaire broadcaster Ken Sawyer is scheduled to be the evening's guest speaker.

160 Area Students Attend West Branch Space Science Camp at Middle School
Williamsport Area Middle School hosted a Space Science Camp from July 25-29.  Some 160 incoming fourth- through ninth-grade students from around the area were able to get a hands-on experience in science-related activities.

Organized by the West Branch Arts Consortium, the camp was funded by a Tree House Fund Grant at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania.

The week-long camp explored subjects such as engineering, rocketry, robotics and aeronautics.
Readers Becoming Authors: Students Write, Illustrate Own Book for Publication
Students participating in this year's summer reading program finished writing their first book for publication on July 28 after learning about the process from children's author Trinka Hakes Noble at the James V. Brown Library.

The three-week "Read, Learn, Write" program was developed and supported by the WASD Education Foundation through Educational Improvement Tax Credit dollars and Giant Food Stores to continue its effort to promote and fund summer literacy initiatives.

Here, Curtin Intermediate School student Jack Klingler, puts the final touches on his book, "The House of All Frights."
WAHS Marching Millionaires to Host Multi-State Drum Corps Invitational Aug. 13
The Williamsport Area High School Band Association will host the multi-state Williamsport Marching Millionaires 2016 Drum Corps Invitational on Aug. 13 at STA Stadium at WAHS.

The event is set to feature drum corps organizations from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

"We have a long history of drum corps in the city and in the region," said John Shableski, president of the band association, during his presentation to City Council last spring.

"Williamsport at one time was home to the Black Eagles and Milton was home to the Keystoners," he said. "Many residents still remember the drum corps shows at Bowman Field.  Now, we have brought drum corps competition back to the city."

The new Williamsport show will be an annual stop on the Drum Corps Associate's tour and will feature groups such as the Reading Buccaneers and Connecticut Hurricanes, according to Shableski.

2016 Distinguished Alumni Award Nominations Sought

The group will present the award during a pre-game ceremony at the high school's Homecoming football game on Oct. 14.

"WAHS has produced outstanding graduates through the years who have achieved or done great things, either in their field of work or through public service.  This is one way to honor them for what they have accomplished and to kind of bring them back to where it began," said Susan Swank-Caschera, committee chairwoman.

For those waiting to nominate an individual, either living or deceased, the committee has created a nomination form that can be found at the foundation office, 2780 West Fourth St., or by clicking here.

For an alumnus to be considered for the award, nominations must be received in the district's foundation office on or before Sept. 9
