WAHS Senior Renovates School's Library Patio

WAHS senior James Michael Gardner, son of April and Mike Gardner, earned the rank of Eagle Scout in December as a member of Boy Scouts Troop 12 at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Last month, there was a court of honor held at the church where James was presented his Eagle Scout rank.

This past year, James worked on his Eagle Scout Project at the high school, where he renovated the building's library patio.

During the Eagle Project, he supervised and led a group of fellow scouts and adults.  His project took 257 "man hours" to complete.  The project wrapped up in mid November.

Mentorship Through Science Program Has 'Explosive' Second-Year Finish

WAHS students wrapped up a five-week-long Mentorship Through Science Program on March 4 at Curtin Intermediate School, led by WAHS teacher Mrs. Jennifer Flint.

The high schoolers worked with about a dozen sixth-grade Curtin students after school every Wednesday through the winter, giving them hands-on lessons in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), thanks to a $570-grant secured from the 2013 Pennsylvania College of Technology Youth Leadership Program.

Last week, students had a special, "explosive" end to the program, as they were able to use baking soda and vinegar to create and learn about more volatile experiments.

'Read Across America' Celebrated Across the District with Events, Guests

Schools across the Williamsport Area School District celebrated Read Across America Week in honor of Dr. Suess's birthday with a number of events and special guest readers last week.

Hepburn-Lycoming Primary School students had a special visit by The Cat in the Hat (played by school bus driver Vivian Pena), who read Oh! The Places You'll Go! Other schools, like Cochran and Jackson primary schools were challenged to each read 1,000 books as their prized school pigs were held captive and for ransom by a mysterious figure known only as "Old MacDonald."

Beyond the schools, WAMS Student Council members Dierdre LeBlank, Bree Patterson, Christina McMahon and Katrina Zaczkiewicz read Dr. Seuss books to residents of The Williamsport Home.

WAHS Automotive Students Earn Fifth Place at PAA Statewide Competition

WAHS automotive students David Covey and Zach Shade recently participated in the Pennsylvania Automotive Association's statewide competition in Hershey, earning fifth-place.
